Norwich host Liverpool at the Carrow Road (Norwich) in the 1st round of the 2021/22 Premier League season and the match kicks off at 5.30 pm (UK) on Saturday, August 14. Read our reasons for Norwich vs Liverpool prediction and betting tips.
NORWICH vs LIVERPOOL: GAME EXPECTATIONS
Premier League new boys Norwich face the daunting task of hosting title hopefuls Liverpool to kick off their 2021-22 campaign on Saturday. The Canaries travelled to Anfield to take on Liverpool in their opening game of 2019-20, losing 4-1, and they will be hoping to avoid another thrashing this time around. Liverpool, on the other hand, relinquished the Premier League title in 2020-21 as injuries hit hard and Jurgen Klopp will be eager to mount a better challenge to defending champions Man City this time around.
NORWICH vs LIVERPOOL: FACTS TO LOOK OUT FOR
Norwich’s brief stint away from the Premier League saw them earn their fifth promotion back to the top-flight since 2004/05. However, their last PL attempt in 2019/20 saw them register a mere five victories (D6, L27), and manager Daniel Farke’s subsequent 13.16% win-rate in England’s top tier remains the joint-second worst of any manager with 30+ PL games on their résumé. Their last two PL seasons resulted in immediate relegation, and hopes for a bright start look slim as the ‘Canaries’ are winless in their eight previous matchday one fixtures of a new PL campaign (D3, L5) - the longest such ongoing streak by a current PL team.
As for the Reds, they avoided one of the worst title defences in PL history, as a ten-game unbeaten streak (W8, D2) to conclude last season propelled them to a miraculous third-place finish. An uninspiring two wins from six games vs promoted teams last season (D3, L1) illustrates how Liverpool were not their traditional selves last term. Unbeaten on opening day under Jürgen Klopp, the ‘Reds’ couldn’t have hand-picked better opposition to start this campaign. Not only are they undefeated against Norwich in 14 PL games but their current run of seven consecutive wins at Norwich is their second-best away top-flight winning run in their history.
NORWICH vs LIVERPOOL: TEAM NEWS
This time around, City have converted the loans of Ben Gibson and Dimitris Giannoulis into permanent deals and landed Kosovo international Milot Rashica from Werder Bremen for what could turn into a club-record fee. They did lose Emiliano Buendia over the summer but have so far managed to keep hold of Max Aarons and Todd Cantwell. The latter is actually an injury doubt for Saturday. Pre-season has been a bit of a nightmare for Norwich due to several positive COVID-19 cases but summer signing Milot Rashica is one of those back in training and available for this one.
Meanwhile, at Liverpool Klopp has lost Holland international Georginio Wijnaldum to PSG on a free transfer but did bring in defender Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig. Andy Robertson picked up an injury in pre-season but Kostas Tsimikas looked comfortable in a 3-1 friendly win over Osasuna. Diogo Jota may have to settle for a place on the bench with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino still Klopp's first-choice front three. Defence-wise, Joel Matip, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have recovered from long-term injuries, but there is still a little bit more work for the latter pair to be back at full fitness.

Liverpool haven’t lost on the opening day of the Premier League season since a 3-0 defeat at West Brom in 2012/13, winning each of the last three and coming out on top in seven of eight during that sequence. Although the most recent meeting between the teams at Carrow Road in February 2020 ended 1-0 to the Reds, history suggests there will be plenty of goals. That was a seventh consecutive victory in the fixture for Liverpool, whose previous six trips to 30 goals, so to expect another goal-fest seems reasonable.
