After a defeat in their away season opener against QPR, Nottingham Forest await Cardiff on the second day in the Championship on Saturday, September 19 at the City Ground (Nottingham), and the match kicks off at 12.30pm (UK).
Putting their chances to bed was a weak point for Forest last season, as they were the second-lowest scoring team in the top half of the table, and even though they addressed the lack of creativity and goals in Luke Freeman and Lyle Taylor, it was the same old story for manager Sabri Lamouchi. A debut at home against Cardiff will be the next opportunity to right the last season's wrongs.
Not all was well for their rivals too. Cardiff suffered a shock home 0-2 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in south Wales. It was surely an unexpected scoreline for the Bluebirds having in mind the ambitions of both sides this season. Neil Harris will hope his team respond appropriately and pick up first points when they travel to Nottingham.
NOTTINGHAM FOREST VS CARDIFF MATCH ANALYSIS
After missing the play-offs on a crazy final day at the Championship last season, Forest's start of the new campaign didn't exactly went as expected. Just as their Saturday's rivals, Nottingham Forest failed to score in their season opener at the weekend against QPR. The only players to reach double digits last season were Grabban and Joe Lolley, but were both largely ineffective as Forest couldn't make a comeback. Sabri Lamouchi will have to go back to the drawing board as this was their second game in a week where they failed to score, after a 1-0 defeat to Barnsley in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
The Reds really needed more players to lift them last season, so it's significant that they have signed a few fresh and some familiar names this summer. However, the most important thing will be to stick with their manager even in case of a bad start as they wouldn't want to go through the rebuilding process again.
The Bluebirds have strengthen their attack this summer, adding Wales international Kieffer Moore from Wigan and Sheyi Ojo on loan from Liverpool. They both made their debuts at the weekend against the Owls, but didn't make too much difference as their team already shipped two goals in the first half. The team lacked ideas and creativity to break down the resolute Wednesday's defense in the second half.
Cardiff's anemic start of the new campaign should raise some concerns. Just as their Saturday's opponents this was their second match in a row where they failed to score against lower opposition. On September 5 they were architects of their own undoing as they lost to League One side Northampton Town (3-0) in the first round of the Carabao Cup. However, they are a settled side, and even if they are not most pleasing on the eye, they are effective at what they do best. If they find the grit so typical of them, the goals should hopefully come as well.

Cardiff has a better head-to-head record with 11 wins to Nottingham's 4 recently, but their situations are much the same this time, as both team are recovering from their losses at the end of the previous campaign. They have had a similar start to this campaign as well, and we will probably have a cagey and tight contest when they face each other on Saturday. Both managers have a single win from their two encounters so far, so whoever wins on Saturday, will break the goalless run of defeats which could turn their team's fortune at the start of a 20/21 season.
