Nottingham host Barnsley at the City Ground (Nottingham) in the 27th round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 3 pm (UK) on Saturday, Januyary 30.
After being undefeated in seven matches in all competitions (W4, D3), Nottingham head into this match on the back of a 2-1 home defeat against Middlesbrough in the league and a 5-1 defeat at Swansea in the Round 4 of the FA Cup. They are five points from the bottom-three in 20th place and could do with three points to prevent further sinking. As for Barnsley, the visitors come into this game following a 1-0 win over Daniel Farke's Norwich last Saturday in the fourth round of the FA Cup and a 2-2 draw against Cardiff in the league. They are on a four-game winless streak (D1, L3) during which they’ve scored just two goals. As a result, they have fallen to 12th in the table and are now 7 points away from play-offs.
Nottingham Forest, despite their upturn in form upon Hughton’s appointment, are still sitting in 20th place, dangerously close to the relegation zone, and will be well aware of how hard it will be to drag themselves away from the drop. However, they were on the right track after being unbeaten in six in the second-tier (W3, D3) prior to their defeat against Boro. They had started a calendar year with two league wins in a row for the first time since 2010, and should not let their heads down after the latest draw at home and a convincing exit from the FA Cup.
Against Boro, Forest could not find an equaliser and a miserable evening was completed by Yuri Ribeiro's 97th-minute red card as they were second best by a considerable margin against Warnock's Boro. Later on, in the FA Cup, Hughton made 10 changes to their starting XI against Boro, but the Forest's second string spent mist of the match on the back foot. They improved marginally after the interval, but the hosts scored three times in the last 10 minutes to ensure their progress to the next round.
Barnsley have started this new campaign in the same vein after miraculously escaping the relegation on the final day of the last season. They had been sitting near the relegation zone early in the campaign but have dramatically improved their form since then. The Tykes were without a win in their first seven matches, but their turnaround has been brilliant. In their next 20 matches they have won 12 and lost 8 and got really close to play-off berths.
The Tykes have been in fine form this season under Valerien Ismael but are coming into this match on the back of a little purple patch in the Championship – they lost three in a row against Norwich (1-0), Swansea (0-2) and Watford (1-0). They did, however, win their FA Cup Round 3 and 4 matches against League Two side Tranmere (2-0) and Championship leaders Norwich (1-0), before being demolished at Swansea in the Round 5. The Tykes will, therefore, be keen for a good start here in order to get their league campaign back on track.

Nottingham have lost their last three games against Barnsley in all competitions, with Barnsley looking to complete a league double over the Reds for the first time since the 2005/06 season in League One.
However, it will be tough to repeat their 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest on November 21 as the hosts haven’t lost back-to-back home league matches since October 2020, while manager Chris Hughton hasn’t lost consecutive home Championship games since January 2016 with Brighton.
