Two defensive errors cost PAOK as they went down to a 2-1 defeat in Russia in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Play-Offs round. On Wednesday at the Toumba Stadium, they meet again in a match which will decide who will progress to the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.
The first leg match of the UEFA Champions League play-off round began in a very stressful way for the Krasnodar. In the 6th minute referee, Turpin ordered a penalty kick against the home team after the ball had hit Kaio’s arm. Matvei Safonov was very focused and better in a duel with Dimitris Pelkas who shot from the spot. Pelkas fired a penalty straight at Safonov, who rescued his team with a solid save. That gave confidence to the Krasnodar players who tried several spectacular combinations. Petrov was supposed to score an opener after a pass by Olsson, but he missed the target. On another occasion, Živković saved a low driven shot taken by Cabella on the far corner.
They were punished on the 32nd minute with a rare counterattack, PAOK broke through the right flank of the home team’s defense, Dimitris Pelkas turned in a low cross for the visitors. Αndrija Ζίβκοβιτς produced a great run down the left, squaring the ball across goal for Pelkas, who met the ball perfectly to flick a superb finish into the bottom corner past Safonov to open the scoring.
Krasnodar scored a quick equalizer, Rémy Cabella beat a defender inside the penalty area, and the defender kicked his ankle with both legs. Viktor Claesson scored with a Panenka penalty kick. He stepped up to loft the ball over Zivko Zivkovic and level at 1-1.
In the 68th minute, the visiting team barely missed, Safonov and the goalpost saved the hosts. A few minutes later a delicate pass by Petrov was converted into a flick to Rémy Cabella by Berg, and the Krasnodar recorded a comeback win.
As was anticipated, the two teams produced tough and determined performances over the 90 minutes. Krasnodar and PAOK battled fiercely, and it was Russians who left the pitch with smiles, although their advantage is a slender one ahead of the second leg.
At the weekend PAOK had a tough time against Volos in a goalless draw, a result which means the visitors dropped another two points in the title race. PAOK’s goalless draw at the Panthessaliko Stadium vs Volos means they have now gone two games without a win, following last week’s home draw against Atromitos.
Abel Ferreira opted for a rotation policy for this match and handed starting berths to newcomers Čolak and Wagué, as well as Pereira, Ninua, and Vrakas. PAOK did not start the match well at all, struggling to create a threat, with only one headed effort from Čolak, and a good double-chance from a set-piece when Crespo and Mihaj threatened. In the second half, PAOK began strongly, and in the 50th minute, Čolak saw a header cannon back off the post, while Pereira and Pelkas failed to beat Garavelis with shots on the home goal.
Ferreira introduced Α.Zivkovic, Tziolis, Giannoulis, El Kaddouri, and Koutsias, changed the team’s formation, but could not find the solutions he needed to win the game, which ended goallessly.
Krasnodar also suffered in the Russian Premier League. In the first minute against Sochi Petrov stepped on Zaika’s foot in his area, and Christian Noboa scored an opener from a penalty kick. In the first half, the visitors had at least three chances to make the score equal again, but they didn’t convert nice actions and in the 43rd minute Smolnikov hit the goalpost.
The start of the second half was better because Kirill Zaika had received two bookings in two minutes and Krasnodar with player more on the pitch dominated. In the 59th minute, Sergei Petrov won the second ball after a blocked shot by Cabella and fired in into the far corner of the net. In the remaining half, an hour the Krasnodar pushed for the win but unfortunately for them, none of those efforts resulted in a scored goal and Sochi earned a valuable point.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
