Portugal meet France at the Puskás Aréna (Budapest) in the EURO 2020 Group F Round 3 match and the game kicks off at 8 pm (UK) on Wednesday, June 23. Read our reason for Portugal vs France prediction and betting tips.
WHO WILL EMERGE VICTORIOUS IN THIS REMATCH OF EURO 2016 FINAL?
This match pits the World champions against the defending Euro champions and promises to be a thrilling one as it will have a major say in how Group F plays out. Portugal started strongly against Germany, but two own goals in the space of four first half minutes saw ’Selecao’ eventually fall to a 4-2 defeat. Currently third in Group F, a draw may still be enough to book a spot in the next round. France need only to avoid defeat to secure their place in the knockout stages of the competition. The pair were drawn in the same UEFA Nations League group, with Les Bleus picking up four points from their two meetings with Portugal. In a repeat of the Euro 2016 final, France may just edge out Portugal to secure first in the Group of Death.
PORTUGAL’S GLARING WEAKNESSES EXPOSED
After winning their Euro 2020 opener here at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, Portugal lost 4-2 to Germany in a torrid display at the Allianz Arena in Munich. Already the first team to concede two own goals in a single Euro finals game, travel-worn Portugal risk being the first defending European champions eliminated at the group stage since Greece in 2008 if they lose this one.
While Fernando Santos’ men are not known for their offensive flair, their ability to absorb anything that comes their way and execute the basic fundamentals of football effectively has led them far in competitions. However, as seen by their thrashing on Saturday, it may not be the case this time. They may not have the most fluid style of play, but they will need to adjust to changing circumstances going forward, starting with France.
FRANCE TO RESPOND TO A SHOCKING DRAW AGAINST HUNGARY
TIP #1: Liverpool star Jota looked lively without getting his due reward. He netted his first goal of the tournament against France and for him to score again at any time here appeals from the Portugal vs France odds.
On their day both nations can beat each other but we have to remember that Portugal have a poor record against France and have lost 19 times from 27 games. France are strong in every department but we have seen a weakness and so far it is their finishing which has been poor. France got their Euro 2020 campaign off to a roaring start with a 1-0 win over Germany. But in the following round, a humbling draw against Hungary has made things complicated for Les Bleus.
Despite leading Group F, they might finish in any of the group’s four positions depending on the outcome of the last round of matches. They might have defeated a strong German squad, but Les Bleus are yet to announce themselves as the powerhouse they are and will be hoping to do so against Portugal. The solidity of their backline and the presence of N’Golo Kante means that, while they are intimidated, they are seldom beaten.
TIP #2: Antoine Griezmann can make an historic impact, as one goal would put him joint-third with Thierry Henry (12) for France goals at major tournaments. We back him to score at any time against Portugal.
