Portugal host the Republic of Ireland at Estádio Algarve (Faro/Loulé) in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifications and the game kicks of at 7.45 pm (UK) on Wednesday, September 1. Read our reasons for Portugal vs Republic of Ireland prediction and betting tips.
PORTUGAL VS IRELAND: STATS & FACTS
Portugal last faced the Republic of Ireland in June 2014 in a friendly, with Portugal winning 5-1 in East Rutherford. The Iberians have won 11 of their last 12 matches in World Cup qualifying (D1) since losing 2-0 to Switzerland back in September 2016, while the Republic of Ireland haven’t won any of their last 13 competitive matches (D7, L6), scoring only five times in this run. Portugal top Group A after the first batch of qualifiers in March thanks to a healthy six goals across the three matches. For those hoping for a surprise result, Ireland appear to have forgotten the art of causing an upset, despite coming close on several occasions recently. Ireland’s last 18 starts as pre-match outsiders have resulted in nine draws and nine defeats. Alarmingly, Ireland have also failed to score in 75% of their last 12 matches against all opposition.
PORTUGAL VS IRELAND: PRE-MATCH TALK
Portugal are top of Group A after beating Azerbaijan 1-0 and Luxembourg 3-1 either side of a 2-2 draw away to second-placed Serbia. However, they failed in their defense of the European Championships title with Belgium proving just too strong at the last-16 stage. Keen to put their earliest ever exit from a Euro finals behind them, Portugal can draw upon some strong home form when hosting Ireland for the first time in more than 20 years. Fernando Santos will seek to regroup and an experienced squad should be able to ease through this game.
Ireland, on the other hand, earned plenty of praise for a gutsy performance when beginning Group A with a 3-2 loss to Serbia in Belgrade. However, there was no dressing up the disappointment of a 1-0 defeat by Luxembourg in Dublin. Also, the past year has brought just a single victory in 13 outings, though, and that in a friendly against minnows Andorra! Nevertheless, Stephen Kenny and his fighting Irish are determined to go out and put on good performances in the next few games.
PORTUGAL VS IRELAND: TEAM NEWS
Cristiano Ronaldo, though he left Juventus' training with an arm injury and is doubtful for Wednesday, can chat to Bruno Fernandes about his impending return to Man Utd while Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has started the club season well. Joao Felix is still recovering from an ankle operation, while Man City stars Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo, and Bernardo Silva will be joined by Wolves trio Nelson Semedo, Joao Moutinho, and Ruben Neves in a powerful squad.
Meanwhile, Stephen Kenny can call on some top-level defenders, such as Everton’s Seamus Coleman, Matt Doherty of Tottenham, and Shane Duffy, who looks back on song since returning to Brighton. However, the Republic are sadly lacking in quality up front these days, with Shane Long down the Southampton pecking order and James McClean in League One with Wigan. Defender Nathan Collins received his first senior call-up as Aaron Connolly and Jeff Hendrick return to the squad for the Portugal clash.
