Preston host Cardiff in the 5th round of the Championship at Deepdale (Preston) on Sunday, October 18 and the match kicks off at 12pm (UK).
MATCH PREVIEW
Preston didn't make a flying start to this new season with two identical 0-1 home defeats to Swansea and Stoke and a 2-2 draw with Norwich in the second round. However, the Lilywhites did well to crush Brentford 4-2 on the road after being 2-0 down at half-time before the international break. They are now 14th in the table with 4 points from four rounds.
As for Cardiff, they suffered a shock home 0-2 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in south Wales on their opening day. It was surely an unexpected score-line for the Bluebirds but they responded appropriately and registered their first win of the campaign against Nottingham (0-2), However, they got back to winless ways after losing to Reading (1-2) and drawing against Blackburn (0-0) most recently. They are 17th in the table, three place below Preston on goal difference with the same points tally.
MATCH ANALYSIS
Preston have started the season on the wrong foot, but a sensational second-half fightback to sink the Bees before the international break can give them a confidence boost ahead of the Sunday's match. The Lilywhites had found the net just three times in their opening six games, but stunned Brentford with four goals in 18 second-half minutes and comfortably held out for only a second victory in their past 15 visits to Brentford. Preston have established themselves as a mid-table club in the last five campaigns as they have finished 11th,11th,7th,14th and 9th, and the big question is if they can break into that top-six bracket this season. Alex Neil, the manager, remains faithful to the Lilywhites which signals the believe he must have in this crop of players. They have the good foundations to make that push for the Premier League and what's been missing is that elusive X-factor. They welcome Cardiff on Sunday, hoping they can register a second win on the trot.
Unlike many clubs in the Championship, Cardiff didn't go through too much commotion this summer, so they have a settled side, which should be a big positive for them. They are a well-tuned squad and that should have given them a head-start. Their biggest strength are set pieces, they are not most fun to watch, but they are effective at what they do best. However, despite their grit, the goals are lacking and that is why the Bluebirds are looking to bolster their attacking resources and sign the 25-year-old Barnsley forward Cauley Woodrow before the transfer window closes on Friday. The Welsh side became the first team this season to keep a clean sheet against Blackburn, despite playing with 10 men from the 70th minute. Neil Harris reiterated afterwards that if they find a bit of nous at the top end, they can hope the better results will come. Cardiff can take the positives into their next match against another under-performers and maybe start turning their fortunes around from there.

As for some stats and facts, their last 20 head-to-head matches have seen Preston win 7 times and Cardiff only little more with 8 wins. Another 5 matches ended without a winner. They have averaged 2.65 goals in those fixtures with Preston scoring 1.45 and Cardiff bagging 1.20 goals on average. Preston was without a win in their head-to-head matches last season with a goalless draw in first part of the season and a defeat at home (1-3) in June.
After 3 straight defeats at home in all comps and with 3 wins in their last 16 league games, Preston will look to bounce on the impressive second-half performance against Brentford, while Cardiff, who have won by 2 or more goals in 5 of their last 10 away league games and have won 6 of their last 8 away matches in Championship, will be up for it too.
Thus, my prediction is: Over 2.5 goals
