PRESTON VS READING MATCH ANALYSIS
The Lilywhites had lost back-to-back league games and received a 4-1 thumping at the hands of Wycombe in the FA Cup Round 3 ahead of their trip to the Midlands where they responded with a much-improved performance in a 1-0 win at Birmingham. They are sitting in 10th place and a win against reading will keep them within reach of the play-off berths. As for Reading, the Royals got back to winning ways on Tuesday following an impressive 3-1 win over Coventry. The win lifted them to fifth in the table and in the play-off mix, 10 points off the top with a game in hand.
The hosts will view this contest as the perfect opportunity to string back-to-back wins in the Championship. Alex Neil's side ended the calendar year with three successive victories, but they have now lost the same amount of games in all competitions since the turn of the year. Now seven points behind the top-six, Alex Neil is aware that only victories will do if his team are to participate in what will be a heated race for the play-offs.
Preston had not scored a goal from open play since their fixture with Coventry on December 29, a period spanning 342 minutes, prior to their Birmingham trip. After an even first half, the visitors should have taken the lead shortly after the break when Brad Potts wasted a great opportunity, but they eventually made their pressure tell when Scott Sinclair found the bottom corner to give his side a narrow win at St.Andrew’s and boost their top-six hopes.
Reading, on the other hand, have promotion ambitions and will look to get all three points to consolidate their playoff chances. Veljko Paunovic's men tend to do better against sides that are lower than them in the standings. They will also look to get the record straight against Preston after losing the reverse home encounter 3-0 on November 4.
Against the Sky Blues in midweek, Coventry started the stronger but Veljko Paunovic's Royals then took control of the match. Joao, who has scored eight goals in his past eight Championship games, gave Reading the lead against the run of play. Midfielder Ejaria doubled the lead and Rinomhota found the bottom corner for the third on his 100th Royals appearance. The victory moved them above Brentford and Bournemouth, within three points of an automatic promotion spot.

Preston are looking to record a league double over Reading for the first time since the 2015/16 campaign. The visitors have won their last two away league matches against Preston, the only time the Royals have ever won consecutive away league games against the Lilywhites.
Preston will draw confidence from their last encounter against Reading even though that was their first win against Reading since 2017. The Royals, on the other hand, aim to build on back-to-back wins over Huddersfield and Coventry, but beating Preston on the road is easier said than done. A close match is on the horizon at Deepdale.
BettingKick’s Preston vs Reading prediction is: Under 2.5 goals
