Rapid Wien host Arsenal in the first round Group B tie in the Europa League at the Allianz Stadium (Wien) on Thursday, October 22 and the match kicks-off at 5.55pm (UK).
MATCH PREVIEW
Arsenal’s Austrian opponents booked their place in the EL group stage after failing to progress to the Champions League groups stage having won against Lokomotiva Zagreb in the first qualifying round (0-1), but eventually losing to KAA Gent (2-1) in the third round. They are still unbeaten at the start of the Austrian Bundesliga after 4 rounds (W3-D1) and have 6 wins from their last 8 matches in all competitions (W6-D1-L1).
As for Arsenal, they have qualified directly for the group stage of the Europa League by winning the FA Cup in England even though they finished 8th in the league. The Gunners, the two-time finalists from 2000 and 2019 are certainly one of the big teams and favourites to lift the EL trophy in their 4th consecutive season in the Europa League.
MATCH ANALYSIS
Rapid will be disappointed to be in the Europa League as they only had to beat Genk to be in the Champions League. A young team, with only one player over the age of 30, they are the most successful team in Austria with 32 titles although the last was 12 years ago, which was their last major trophy, as Salzburg have replaced them as the Austrian powerhouse. Knocked out in the last 32 of this competition was their best run in Europe since 1996. At this stage of the Europa League 12 months ago, Rapid did get results against Rangers, Moscow and Villarreal but an intimidating atmosphere played a huge part in that. They will miss their ‘Ultra Rapids’ who would have at least mentally tested Arsenal stars.
Arsenal are now very much at home in the Europa League with this their fourth straight season in the competition. The Gunners enter as favourites, but last season represented a big disappointment. After semi-final and final appearances in 2018 and 2019, being knocked out in the Round of 32 by Olympiacos was a significant step in the wrong direction. Arteta was new in the job at the time however and with 10 months under his belt as Arsenal’s No 1, there’ll be no excuses this time. With the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Willian and now Thomas Partey, the Gunners possess a squad that will expect to be in Gdansk come final time, even if the group stages may be taken as a chance to rotate and blood some of the club’s promising youngsters.

This will be the first meeting between Rapid Vienna and Arsenal and this is Rapid’s eighth Europa League campaign, reaching the knockout stages on two occasions previously, in 2015/16 and 2018/19.
As for the Gunners, this is their 4th consecutive season in the Europa League, reaching the semi-final in 2017-18, the final in 2018-19 and the Last 32 in 2019-20.
In Rapid’s current squad only 7 are not domestic-based players yet very few have senior caps which should tell us the level they are at. However, Austrian Bundesliga is getting more competitive every year and Arsenal cannot expect a scroll in the park when they visit Wien on Thursday.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
