READING VS BOURNEMOUTH MATCH ANALYSIS
Reading head into this match with an impressive 3-0 win over Coventry, following the exit from the Round 4 of the FA Cup at the hands of Luton (1-0) and a disappointing goalless draw at Preston. They remain fifth in the table, 9 points off the top and only 2 points from the automatic promotion berth (2nd place). They welcome Bournemouth in the midst of a five-game unbeaten run in the league (W3, D2) and are only 2 points above the visitors, who could leapfrog them with a win here. The Cherries, on the other hand, come into this match on the back of two 1-0 defeats in the second tier – against Luton at home and at Championship strugglers, Derby on January 19
Reading have promotion ambitions and will look to get all three points to consolidate their play-off chances. They will also look to get the record straight against Bournemouth after losing the reverse away encounter 4-2 earlier in the league. Sunday was a huge chance to go level on points with Swansea and Watford in second place, but the Royals squandered it mainly down to a missed penalty from star man Lucas Joao in the 83rd minute.
Reading knew victory would give them precious three points in the race for automatic promotion, but struggled to break down a resilient Lilywhites defence. The home defence did well to keep Joao quiet, but the Portuguese striker looked set to make it nine goals in as many games when he was wrestled to the ground by Rafferty, only to cap a frustrating afternoon by firing the penalty wide. The Royals extended their unbeaten league run to five, but stay fifth after a share of spoils at Deepdale.
As for Bournemouth, they are the league’s second-top scorers this season (38), only behind Blackburn with 40, which is a sign of doing something right despite their little dent in form. Jason Tindall's side have also kept clean sheets in eight of their last eleven matches in all competitions. The South Coast side had also lost the fewest games in the Championship along with Brentford (3), prior to their last two league matches.
Their latest defeat came at Derby, where Wayne Rooney picked up his first win as permanent Derby County manager over the stuttering Cherries as Jason Tindall's side have taken just one point from the past three matches. The introduction of former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, in his second spell at the club, didn’t help either – they have now missed three chances to close the gap on second-placed Swansea in the past seven days.

As for the latest missed opportunity, what’s done is done. Joao can't go back in time and score the penalty. Preston just have to turn all their attention to Friday night as Bournemouth come to the Mad Stad. Quite simply, it’s the biggest game of their season so far. Win it and the confidence can come back in the click of a finger.
Bournemouth, on the other hand, coming from two defeats in the league, can't afford to waste a half as they did with the first half at Pride Park. Clear-cut opportunities mustn’t be so hard for them to come by. They have to ask the right questions against Reading this time around, as more and more teams will set up to hit them on the counter or wait for a mistake.
