Reading host Cardiff at the Madejski Stadium (Reading) in the 42nd round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 6 pm (UK) on Friday, April 16. Read our reasons for Reading vs Cardiff prediction and betting tips.
The Championship table does not make for pretty viewing if you're a Reading FC supporter right but now but there are still reasons to be hopeful about a top six place. If the 2-0 loss at Watford wasn't bad enough, Royals' rivals for the play-off positions all recorded victories to edge closer to a top-six finish, while pushing Veljko Paunovic's side a step further away. Next for them are Cardiff, the team directly below them in the table. Mick McCarthy's side trail Royals by seven points and although they could mathematically still make the play-offs, it is extremely unlikely after surrendering the lead twice against Blackburn in a 2-2 draw at the weekend.
Reading currently lie in seventh place in the standings - only the second time this season they have fallen outside of the top six. A win for the Royals in the opening Matchday 42 kick-off presents Paunovic's side with an opportunity to apply some pressure on those above them with Brentford, Swansea, Barnsley and Bournemouth all playing over the weekend. Having said that, it would be a great shame for Reading to miss out on at least a play-off final spot having done so well over the past eight months.
However, Reading's form at Madejski Stadium over the past month has been very good. They are unbeaten in their past four games at home (W3, D1). The Welsh side had looked like they would make a late push for the play-offs after a brilliant start under McCarthy, but they have now won just one of their past seven games. That means it should be a good time to face them. Moreover, three of their final five games are on home turf, starting on Friday against Cardiff.
As for Cardiff, they looked capable of a promotion push after a revival under new boss McCarthy led to a run of seven wins and a draw in eight games, but after recording only one win from seven games (D3, L3), City now have no chance of making the play-offs, and the former Ireland boss claimed his side were bitterly disappointed after Blackburn scored late to earn a 2-2 draw on Saturday. The Bluebirds are now nine points off the play-off places with five games remaining.
And even if the Bluebirds could dramatically improve the form that has bought them one win in seven games, manager McCarthy knows it would take an unfeasible collapse of their rivals for them to make the top six. With realistic hopes of making the play-offs appearing to have gone following the 2-2 draw at home to Blackburn Rovers, it looks as the Bluebirds are readying themselves for a summer of rebuilding.

Reading welcome Cardiff with both teams having the same record of one win, two draws and two defeats in their last five matches. Also, Reading have lost only one from their last five games at the Madejski Stadium (W3, D1), while the Bluebirds were thrashed 5-0 at the second-bottom Sheffield Wednesday last time out on the road.
Veljko Paunovic’s men have a couple of teams at the top of the table to play so it's not going to be easy for them to get over the line. On the other hand, McCarthy may have to go back to the drawing board because his team, who were once knocking down all that was put in front of them, are now running into brick walls.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
