Reading host Derby at the Madejski Stadium (Reading) in the 40th round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 3 pm (UK) on Monday, April 5. Read our reasons for Reading vs Derby prediction and betting tips.
A point on Friday at Barnsley was enough to sneak Reading back above Bournemouth in sixth and keep within two points of fifth-placed Tykes, but things could have been so much better. Lucas Joao’s goals have been at the heart of Reading’s promotion push but it will be for his miss of the season at Oakwell last night that he will be remembered if they miss the Championship play-off places. Meanwhile, a 2-0 win against Luton moves Rooney’s side up to 18th in the table and eight points clear of Rotherham, who continue to occupy the final relegation place in the Championship table. As it is, Derby’s position in the table is looking that little bit stronger now following today’s results, which should ease the pressure on them getting a result against Reading.
After a much-needed international break, Reading returned to Championship action this Friday with a tough test to contend with, as they travelled to Oakwell to face Valérien Ismaël’s Barnsley. The Royals hoped to win all three points to secure their place in the top six, but neither side could take the initiative and grab the win. It means Reading are still behind Barnsley in the Championship table, with two points currently separating the sides.
If recent results are anything to go by, Reading appear slightly vulnerable. With two disappointing consecutive 1-1 draws, the Royals' top six fate is no longer in their hands going into the final seven games of the season. Veljko Paunovic's side have some tricky games in their run-in. Apart from this six-pointer against Barnsley, three of the final four away games are against sides above them in the table so the outcome of these games could decide their fate, while home clashes with Swansea and Norwich will also be critical.
As for Derby, Rooney has just watched Derby beat Luton 2-0, handing the Rams a much-needed three points as the division reaches its crucial stage. However, the result has come at a cost, with two of his forwards picking up hamstring injuries, meaning Waghorn and Gregory will most certainly miss out the Monday’s clash with high-flying Reading. The Easter schedule is intense enough, without losing two senior attacking players to injury.
On the other hand, wherever Derby do end up finishing this season, this year will have been a learning curve for Wayne Rooney, as he takes his first steps into management after a remarkable playing career. At the moment, Derby’s lack of attacking firepower is a concern, and it could prove to be the difference between having a tricky end to the season and having a comfortable one. Also, in recent weeks, Rooney has been unable to name a team and stick with it and with his public fall-out with some key players, the Rams may be in for a bumpy ride.

Reading meet Derby looking for their first league double over the Rams since the 2010/11 season after celebrating a 2-0 win at the Pride Park in the reverse fixture in September. However, Reading have only won one of their last eight home league games against Derby (D4, L3).
Reading’s last home league game ended in a 1-1 draw with QPR, ending a run of 20 at the Madejski Stadium without a draw (W11, L9) while Derby, on the other hand, are winless in their last five away league games (D1, L4), failing to score in any of their last four.
The lack of firepower could easily prove damning for Derby against stuttering hosts, and we expect Reading to prevail here. BettingKick’s Reading vs Derby prediction is: Reading win

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
