Reading host Middlesbrough at the Madejski Stadium (Reading) in the 31st round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 3 pm (UK) on Saturday, February 20. Read our reasons for Reading vs Middlesbrough prediction and betting tips.
Reading are having an excellent season under former Chicago Fire manager Velijko Paunovic, having earned 51 points from 30 matches. The Royals had gone three games without a win until Tuesday night where they brushed aside a struggling Bristol City side at Ashton Gate and will be sitting in 5th place when the eight-placed Middlesbrough visit Reading on Saturday. Neil Warnock’sside are also enjoying a much-improved campaign and are just three points behind Bournemouth who occupy the last playoff place in the league. Boro themselves have just finished a baron spell of five games without a win following their 2-1 home win at the Riverside against Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night.
Reading have promotion ambitions and will look to get all three points to consolidate their play-off chances. They will also look to get the record straight against the visitors - ’Boro were the first side to take points off the Royals this season – a goalless affair at the Riverside in October saw two sides share the spoils for their efforts. Reading further underlined their top-six credentials with a convincing win against free-falling Bristol, after experiencing a little bump of their own, going without a win in three (D1, L2).
The Robins weren't the fiercest opposition we’ve played all season, but it was still seriously impressive performance and one that will surely please boss Paunovic and his staff. Two fantastic goals, a clean sheet, and three points away from home - the kind of performance and result that will just breathe the confidence back into the team. And one that sets up another huge game against ‘Boro on Saturday - win that and that is one giant foot in the play-offs.
On the other hand, Neil Warnock could not hide his delight and pride as his Middlesbrough players put their bodies on the line to get back to winning ways against Huddersfield on Tuesday night. Despite going down to 10 men with 10 minutes to play after Paddy McNair was harshly sent off, Boro defended with everything they had to end their five-match winless run (D1, L4).
Promising changes after Saturday's defeat at Derby, Warnock switched to a back three and brought Grant Hall and Fletcher back into the side for their first starts since September after both recovering from injuries. Tuesday win's over Huddersfield has galvanised their ailing Championship play-off bid and successful appeal over McNeil’s red card will be a huge lift. Lastly, Boro are set for another boost with influential winger Marcus Tavernier back in training after a knee problem and he could return next weekend.

Reading meet Middlesbrough being without a win in their last eight league encounters with ’Boro, losing seven times in this run (D1). They also have a negative record against the visitors, with 6 wins to Boro’s 10 in their last 20 meetings.
Reading have not registered back-to-back wins in competitive games since a run of three back in October. They have failed to score in each of their last three games directly after a win and could do with adding more consistency to their long list of qualities.
Meanwhile, we have seen plenty of end-to-end action in Middlesbrough’s recent away games. Seven of their last eight competitive road trips have produced over 2.5 goals, while six also saw both teams score (W3, D1, L4).
BettingKick’s Reading vs Middlesbrough prediction is: Over 2.5 goals
