Real Madrid will host Inter Milan on Tuesday in the third round of the UEFA Champions League group stage match.
One point from the two games and with the teams that came from the third and fourth tier of the draw is not what the Real Madrid fans wanted from the opening matches of the group stage. Real won in the derby against Barcelona but to be successful in Madrid you must win always, especially in the UCL, so the pressure is mounting on Zinedine Zidane. Real Madrid eased to a victory over Huesca on Saturday afternoon, providing the Spanish giants with a good confidence boost ahead of two Champions League meetings with Inter.
The match on Tuesday will be decisive to Los Blancos' hopes of qualifying out of the group after a disastrous start saw them lose to Shakhtar Donetsk and draw with Borussia Monchengladbach. Dropping any further points to Antonio Conte's side is not an option, so Zidane rotated his selection against Huesca to protect his plans for the Italian giants. The main news is that Luka Modric played the entire 90 minutes against Huesca, so he will be on the bench, just as he was vs Barcelona and Borussia Monchengladbach.
There were rests handed to Raphael Varane and Toni Kroos, and the decision to start Eden Hazard on Saturday was taken to hand the Belgian more minutes and increase his match fitness. The former Chelsea star played for 60 minutes before being substituted, the assumption is that Hazard will start in the Champions League for the first time this season.
Looking at Zidane's other substitutions from Saturday's match, the French coach withdrew Lucas Vazquez after 50 minutes, and then Fede Valverde, Hazard, and Marco Asensio all left the pitch on the hour mark. This suggests Zidane needs all those players to be fresh for Inter.
One Real Madrid player has reportedly tested positive for Covid ahead of the Inter game. According to Marca, the whole team will undergo a new round of tests. The identity of the player has not been revealed yet but if the second swab will confirm he is positive, he won’t be eligible to play against Inter on Tuesday.
Injured: Nacho Fernandez, Martin Odegaard, Dani Carvajal
Doubtful: Alvaro Odriozola
Real Madrid (4-3-3): Thibaut Courtois, Lucas Vazquez, Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos, Ferland Mendy, Federico Valverde, Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Marco Asensio, Karim Benzema, Eden Hazard
Inter is in crisis, they are unable to perform on a high level consistently, after another night in a UCL when they didn't have what is needed to earn a victory, they again equalized in the last moments in a game in a Seria A. Draws against Gladbach, Shakhtar and Parma are just an early sign that Antonio Conte needs something more from himself and players if they want to be a title contenders in Italy and capable to get to the knockout stages of the UCL.
Parma played with youthful energy even though it was the veteran Gervinho grabbed a brace. The away side took Inter to the task, exposed the lack of pace in the backline, and the Nerazzurri as usual missed their chances. Inter may have drawn the game 2-2 after Ivan Perisic grabbed a late equalizer but the facts were clear. It’s not the first game they dominated and almost lost. If you don’t score goals in football, you don’t win, it was a clear message from Conte to the players and fans but excuses are many and points are few at the moment.
Inter made chances and took none of them, they created 26 attempts on goal in comparison to Parma’s six, it was a story that had been seen before. It happened with Borussia Monchengladbach too, Shakhtar Donetsk never had a shot on goal, but they still didn’t win. The Italian press is billing this doubleheader with Real as a ‘do or die’ affair and the all involved with Inter in these days know it.
Conte’s strategy being ultimately predictable would perhaps provide an opportunity for preparation for any rival, and Real is among the best in the world, so this is a big reason for concern. Conte will continue to bemoan that Inter needs to be clinical, and it looks like he turned the pressure to Lautaro Martinez to showcase himself in front of the Spanish media in the middle of the claims he is next number nine for Barcelona.
Injured: Matias Vecino
Doubtful: Romelu Lukaku, Milan Skriniar, Alexis Sanchez, Stefano Sensi
Inter Milan (3-5-2): Samir Handanovic, Danilo D'Ambrosio, Stefan de Vrij, Alessandro Bastoni, Achraf Hakimi, Marcelo Brozovic, Arturo Vidal, Ashley Young, Nicolo Barella, Lautaro Martinez, Ivan Perisic

Real showed in the UCL that their defense is far from good at the moment. Both Shakhtar and Gladbach easily found the net multiple times and against Inter they will need to be even more careful. Inter will have to change their style without Lukaku, but their defense is a bigger problem now. Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals look like sure bets.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
