Rennes will be looking to keep league-leading position in Ligue 1 after six rounds when they take on Reims at their Roazhon Park.
As expected Rennes made a very good start of the season, and it is more than obvious that they are determined to be at the top of the table as much as they can and play in the next years as regulars in the UEFA Champions League. Rennes has 13 points after 5 games, only drawing in the first round against Lille, with four consecutive wins against Montepellier, Nimes, Monaco, and St. Etienne. In the next match, Rennes will be looking for a repeat of the result from the last weekend when they defeated Les Vertes as a visiting team at very hostile players for St. Etienne rivals. Victory, as it is, was not surprising but 3-0 in that stadium was more than a great result for Julian Stephen’s team. Following last season’s third-place finish Rennes showed us that they are willing to be consistent with the level of the performances and results and that could be the key for the long season and tough schedule.
In that game, Rennes managed 53% possession and 10 shots on goal with 6 on target, goals were scored by a very talented central defender and a newcomer in Rennes' shirt Nayef Aguerd (33'), Serhou Guirassy (53') kept as informed that he is in great shape and for and Adrien Hunou (89') scored against his former team. To reflect how St. Etienne had difficulties with Rennes' defense, it is easy to see from their just 6 attempts on goal. A look at their previous results shows us that Rennes are unbeaten in their last 6 home league matches. Sehrou Guirassy, who scored his third goal of the season at the weekend, will be the man to keep an eye on in the home team. James Léa Siliki and Faitout Maouassa are not available for the next game.
The visitors, on the other hand, have yet to recover from a shocking elimination in the Europa League qualifiers, with the team losing to PSG at home in their last Ligue 1 match. Reims is not regarded as good travelers, but in the game, with the side that dominates in the French football in the last years, they had some decent chances and showed good defensive organization. In that 2-0 defeat, Reims had 35% possession and 8 attempts on goal with 3 on target. Paris Saint-Germain won on double by Mauro Icardi (9', 62') but Neymar and Mbappe missed some clear chances for an even bigger win.
The attacking players from Reims have suffered from a shortage of goals over their previous 6 encounters, with only two goals scored. They have not won away from home in their last 6 matches in the league and it is the worry that Reims are still waiting for their first win of the season. Only one point after five matches and four straight defeats have left Reims short of confidence. David Guion’s men kicked off their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Monaco, but losses to Lille, Angers, Metz, and PSG have seen the club get off to the worst possible start with only Dijon at the same level of points as them.
Reims was known for their defensive skills in the last season and their sixth place in the standings was huge overachievement regarding budget and individual quality. Reims conceded three goals less than PSG to finish the 2019/20 campaign with the best defensive record in Ligue 1. To measure that with the new season, after having let in just 21 goals in 28 games last term, the team has already conceded eight in five this year.

Rennes has the quality to create and score, as the best goalscoring unit in the five games. Reims are very vulnerable at the moment and home win is the most preferable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
