Republic of Ireland host Luxembourg at the Aviva Stadium (Dublin) in the Group A 2nd round match of the UEFA World Cup qualifications and the game kicks of at 7.45 pm (UK) on Saturday, March 27th. Read our reasons for Ireland vs Luxembourg prediction and betting tips.
The Republic of Ireland's World Cup 2022 qualifying campaign began in disappointing fashion as they fell to a 3-2 defeat by Serbia in Belgrade and with Portugal widely expected to top the group, the result is a blow for the Republic, who are hoping to contend with Serbia for a play-off spot. Now, Kenny and the Republic will look to regroup ahead of Saturday's home qualifier against Luxembourg who were in action on Wednesday night against next year's hosts Qatar in a glorified friendly and went down 1-0 in a dour loss.
After a bright start saw Alan Browne end Ireland’s 11-hour goal drought, substitute Aleksandar Mitrovic served up a timely reminder of his potency with second-half goals that swung the game in the favour of the home side. Serbia captain Dusan Tadic was also outstanding, setting up all three of his side's goals. The result extends Republic boss Stephen Kenny's wait for a first win since taking charge to nine games, although there were clear signs of improvement from the performances they produced during the three international windows in the latter months of 2020.
However, the defeat leaves Ireland with an uphill battle to qualify for Qatar 2022 and coach Kenny may have been a little too ambitious in his team selection, as he chose the relatively untested Josh Cullen alongside Jayson Molumby and Dara O'Shea, in a team that also included rookie keeper Mark Travers. Overall, it’s frustrating losing the opening game as the result of the first match is everything. It doesn't mean Ireland can't get out of the group, they have 21 points to play for, but this defeat is massive.
On the other hand, Luxembourg were engaged in a friendly encounter with Qatar while the rest of their Group A opponents got stuck into some competitive action, and their game might lack edge on Saturday as a result. Luxembourg are the team with the unwanted distinction of participating in the most World Cup qualifiers without ever making it to the finals. This time they have been drawn in another daunting group that also features reigning European champions Portugal.
The Red Lions were beaten 1-0 by next year’s World Cup hosts, while their overall record reads just three wins from their last 19 assignments. Luxembourg have rarely been hammered, however, and only Portugal (twice) and Serbia beat them by two goals or more during that 19-game run. Although this defeat will not be counted in the ranking of the group, Luxembourg will be disappointed not to have put up more of a fight.

Ireland meet Luxembourg having previously won all four games between these two national teams, last time celebrating 2-1 way back in September 1987. The Republic notched one or fewer goals in ten of their last 11 fixtures, while under 2.5 goals has landed in 18 of their last 19 competitive tussles since late 2018.
Luxembourg’s ability to dig in and keep the score down coupled with Ireland’s lack of cutting edge could produce another fixture with little goalmouth action on Saturday, and the BettingKick’s Ireland vs Luxembourg prediction is: Under 2.5 goals

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
