Roma will need a miracle to get back into the race for the top four, but Atalanta surged past Juventus into third and is gunning for a second. Read our reasons for Roma vs Atalanta prediction and betting tips.
Roma is struggling to maintain domestic form with their Europa League commitments. Amadou Diawara is suspended, the injuries keep piling up and this midweek round adds further fatigue to an already tired team that has a dismal record against the other top seven clubs this season. Paulo Fonseca admitted Torino ‘deserved the victory’ after a comeback and it becomes ‘very difficult’ for Roma to reach the top four. The Giallorossi rotated the squad, partly due to injuries and suspension, but also as they played in the Europa League with Ajax on Thursday night. Although Borja Mayoral had given them the early lead, Toro fought back for a 3-1 victory with Antonio Sanabria, Simone Zaza, and Tomas Rincon goals. “There are many regrets because we had the chances to finish it off and we didn’t take them,” Fonseca told the media.
Roma is now in seventh place, four points behind Lazio, who have a game in hand, and their midweek round will be against Atalanta in third. “Torino did better in the second half and I have to say they deserved the victory. When you make many changes from one game to the next, it can affect the team. We were without Leonardo Spinazzola, Riccardo Calafiori, Gianluca Mancini and others we lost midweek. It shouldn’t happen, though. We’ve got to keep going. It’s difficult now, but we must continue fighting. We have an important competition like the Europa League but have to take it one game at a time. Now we’ll have to see who recovers in time for Atalanta.”
Roma (3-4-2-1): Pau Lopez; Mancini, Cristante, Ibanez; Karsdorp, Villar, Veretout, Calafiori; Pellegrini, Mkhitaryan; Dzeko
Suspended: Diawara
Injured: El Shaarawy, Spinazzola, Smalling, Pedro, Kumbulla, Zaniolo
La Dea seems unstoppable at the moment, winning nine of their last 10 Serie A games, and that lone outlier was an unlucky 1-0 defeat at leaders Inter. They showed against Juventus that Gian Piero Gasperini has more than just an all-out attack in his wheelhouse, able to defend stoutly and pick the right moment to strike as well. Gian Piero Gasperini was proud of Atalanta after their ‘deserved’ 1-0 win over Juventus and explained when he decided to switch to a 4-2-3-1 system. La Dea won their first home game against the Old Lady in the last 20 years thanks to a late Ruslan Malinovskyj’s goal. “This win means we can beat them. I want to praise the lads because we beat a strong team. Juventus remain a powerful side. We suffered a little bit, but the victory is justified, and we are proud of it,” Gasperini told the media. “We were without [Hans] Hateboer and [Cristian] Romero, who’s been essential for us, especially when we play with a four-man defense. We had prepared the game thinking about the whole 90 minutes. We knew the game could be decided in the final minutes and that subs could have been crucial. It was a difficult game for our strikers and we had to be compact at the back. Juventus have some great players like [Alvaro] Morata and [Weston] McKennie who can run into open spaces. We are strong in the defensive phase, don’t forget we played 75 minutes down to ten-man against Real Madrid. We kept the balance in a challenging game. We had a few more chances than them,” the coach added.
Has Atalanta secured themselves a top-four finish thanks to today’s win? “It’s still early. Seven games are remaining until the end of the season. This win is important, but the path is still long. There are many clubs in the race for a top-four finish,” Gasperini said. When did he think about his new 4-2-3-1 system? “It was a natural evolution and I must thank my players for their attitude.
It’s a process that has evolved in time. I thought about it during some games this season, but it’s something I was also considering the last term when we had scored 99 goals in Serie A. This season, we struggled a little bit sometimes, I remember the games against Genoa and Udinese when we couldn’t break the deadlock. Then the players’ characteristics can make the difference too, and many of them can play behind a sole striker.”
Atalanta (3-4-1-2): Gollini; Toloi, Palomino, Romero; Maehle, De Roon, Freuler, Gosens; Pessina; Muriel, Duvan Zapata
Suspended: None
Injured: Hateboer

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
