Roma must return to winning ways to keep up with the top four, but a confident Bologna arrives at the Olimpico on Sunday. Read our reasons for Roma vs Bologna prediction and betting tips.
Paulo Fonseca’s men arrive from an uplifting result against Ajax in the first leg of their quarter-finals clash in the Europa League but haven’t won in three Serie A games ahead of Serie A Week 30. Paulo Fonseca praised Roma for their reaction in the comeback win away to Ajax but also slammed the media for ‘incredible lies’ about team bust-ups. The Europa League quarter-final started badly with two errors gifting Davy Klaassen the opening goal, then Roger Ibanez brought down Dusan Tadic for a penalty, which Pau Lopez saved. That proved the turning point, as the Giallorossi went on to win 2-1 with a Lorenzo Pellegrini free-kick and Roger Ibanez half-volley. “It was an important victory, especially after all the injury problems that we’ve had,” Fonseca told the media, having also lost Leonardo Spinazzola through the game. “Ajax is a great team, as we saw tonight, but the lads put in a wonderful performance. Qualification is still open, but winning here was very important. I think the team realized this is a tough moment and gave their all, especially after Spinazzola’s injury, as he had been playing so well. We were always aware that we could score goals here, the team felt confident even during difficult moments. It’s a big victory. It was a match of great intensity and tension, but we did what we prepared.”
The coach did lose his temper when asked about this week’s reports of another bust-up between the squad and their tactician. “I have to do my work, I cannot control criticism. What disappoints me is when there are lies and there has been a lot of them. I am not Italian, so I don’t understand why Roma, who is the only team representing Italy in Europe this week, should be surrounded by all these incredible lies. At this moment, we all ought to be encouraging and helping the Italian team. This week there was all sorts of chaos created with this incredible lie, the idea that the players confronted me and we had some meetings before training. It’s all a lie, it’s not right. I cannot control any of that, I can only control my work and that is what I’m doing.”

Bologna arrives at the Olimpico, after a good performance against League leaders Inter last time, but eventually lost 1-0 to the Nerazzurri. With two wins in their last three games, Sinisa Mihajlovic’s men are looking for revenge already on Sunday. Sinisa Mihajlovic once again complained that Bologna doesn’t convert their chances after a 1-0 defeat to Inter. The Rossoblu had won two on the bounce going into this game, but despite having more possession, they were wasteful and Romelu Lukaku took his chance. “We’ve known for a while that we don’t take our chances. We had so many opportunities tonight where it was easier to score than miss, yet we missed all four, then they converted half a chance,” the Bologna coach told the media. “If you don’t score goals, you won’t win games. I think we overall did better than Inter, we forced them to defend and counter, we pressed and caused them problems. I could not have asked for more in that sense. It’s been the same problem for two years. People always say, if you had a proper center-forward, you might be in Europe. Someone who’d score 15 goals per season, not even 20… I don’t know if we would’ve played better or worse, but we probably would’ve had more points. My lads had their game, we dominated possession, pushed them into their half and Inter barely had opportunities. Unfortunately, we don’t score goals.”
Mihajlovic raised some question marks over his future at the Stadio Dall’Ara. “I am a coach, my job is to train, it’s not as if I can go out there and take free kicks myself. I am not the one who sets the objectives. I am an ambitious coach, but the club makes its decisions and we’ll see at the end of the season who stays and who goes. I am happy anywhere, as long as I enjoy myself and work. As always, ambitious people want something more, but it’s also about what the club wants to do. I have another two years on my contract, I love Bologna, I get along with the fans, the club, and the players, so that’s not an issue. Now we’ll try to end the season, get as many points as possible and play well, then we’ll see what happens.”

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
