Roma host underdogs Braga at Stadio Olimpico on Thursday evening, holding a 2-0 lead from the first leg in Portugal. Read our reasons for Roma vs Braga prediction and betting tips.
Paulo Fonseca stated Roma ‘was missing some individual initiative’ in their 0-0 draw with 10-man Benevento, but ‘it was difficult to do more.’ The Giallorossi had the opportunity to close on Milan in second, but instead, they were held to a 0-0 draw by a Benevento side down to 10 men for 35 minutes. There was late drama at the Stadio Vigorito, as Roma was awarded a penalty for a Daam Foulon tackle on Stephan El Shaarawy, but the decision was revoked via VAR because Lorenzo Pellegrini was offside in the build-up. “It was a difficult match, Benevento closed up well and we reached the final third without any issues, but then didn’t have the individual initiative, we weren’t aggressive enough or clinical,” Fonseca told media.
Fonseca noted that his team lacks consistency and will to risk in the final third. “I do feel the players understood they need to be more concrete in their attacks. It’s true we were slow in the build-up and getting the ball to where we could have shots on goal. I don’t think it was a physical issue. We were missing some individual initiative, taking men on a one-on-one, but also Benevento deserves credit for defending well. Dzeko played in Braga, today it was Borja, this type of match is more difficult for strikers. We don’t have any first-choice players in any role in this team. We did move to a four-man defense when Dzeko came on, we introduced many attacking players, I think it was difficult to do more. We should learn to have more shots from distance as a solution, especially in games like this.”
Roma had only two fit senior center-backs available at the weekend, after losing Bryan Cristante and Roger Ibanez to injury during the time in Portugal. A serious defensive headache for Paulo Fonseca has barely eased, as options such as Chris Smalling, Marash Kumbulla, Davide Santon, and Riccardo Calafiori remain out of action, while Juan Jesus and Federico Fazio were not included on the UEFA list. After impressing in a rare start in the first leg, Amadou Diawara is poised to come back into the XI, with further changes also possible - including a return for Edin Dzeko and an opportunity for Stephan El Shaarawy - as Fonseca is mindful that his men must face Milan in the league just three days later.
Roma: Lopez; Mancini, Cristante, Spinazzola; Karsdorp, Diawara, Veretout, Peres; Pedro, El Shaarawy; Dzeko
Braga will hope to pounce Roma’s tough schedule and extract some redemption. Turning the tie around completely seems like a tough task. Their record in the away games of the knockout rounds won't inspire much hope. The Minho Warriors have lost their last four games on the road, even failing to score in three of them. Braga continued a fine run of league form at the weekend, which has seen them win five of their last six Liga NOS games. A 4-2 victory over Tondela sees Carlos Carvalhal's men sitting third in the Primeira Liga table, two points ahead of Benfica and just one point behind second-placed Porto.
For the visitors, Ricardo Esgaio will be ineligible due to suspension incurred for his red card in the first game and coach Carlos Carvalhal has several other absences to cover, including star center-back David Carmo. Andre Castro, winger Iuri Medeiros and left-back Francisco Moura are all out with injuries. Andraz Sporar could struggle to regain his place in the starting lineup, having failed to score in four matches since his loan arrival from Sporting in January. Experienced versatile midfielder Nico Gaitan, formerly of Benfica and Atletico Madrid, comes back into the team in support of the frontman.
Braga: Matheus; Ze Carlos, Tormena, Sequeira, Silva; Al Musrati, Fransergio, Gaitan; R. Horta, Galeno; Sporar

Roma's much-changed starting lineup could face several problems, especially at the back, and Braga will try to punish their lack of playing time together. Our final Roma vs Braga prediction is both teams to score.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
