Roma and Fiorentina are only divided by one point in the Serie A table as the Giallorossi host La Viola at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.
After a brilliant game and 3-3 draw vs Milan on Monday, Roma failed to break down CSKA Sofia in a goalless draw at the Stadio Olimpico and even risked losing it at times, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan hit the crossbar. The Giallorossi made wholesale changes for this game after winning 2-1 away to Young Boys with a late comeback. Chris Smalling got his first appearance of the season following an injury and the transfer saga with Manchester United. There was a huge chance for the Giallorossi on 32 minutes when Villar combined with Mkhitaryan, the Armenian’s delightful chipped volley bouncing off the top of the crossbar.
Borja Mayoral’s header was off target after the restart, but CSKA Sofia had a huge double opportunity when Pau Lopez parried the Sankhare header and Valentin Antov blasted the rebound over the bar from six yards. Lorenzo Pellegrini and Edin Džeko came off the bench and both of them had chances to change the score. Dzeko should’ve found the net on 87 minutes, but was a little too late to tap in the Pedro assist.
Roma has Mamadou Diawara and Riccardo Calafiori out of action due to Covid while Nicolò Zaniolo and Javier Pastore are still recovering from their injuries. The physical conditions of Davide Santon and Carles Perez need to be assessed as the pair have had muscular issues of late.
Roma (3-4-2-1): Mirante; Ibanez, Smalling, Mancini; Karsdorp, Veretout, Pellegrini, Spinazzola; Pedro, Mkhitaryan, Dzeko
Suspended:
Injured: Diawara, Pastore, Zaniolo, Calafiori
The Viola were feeling the pressure already after a poor opening to the season, so Jose Callejon got his first start in place of injured Franck Ribery as a striker rather than a wing-back against the Udinese. Fiorentina started brightly as Pol Lirola was wreaking havoc down the right flank and he sparked the opening goal too, his cross taken down by Cristiano Biraghi at the far post, pulling back from the by-line for Gaetano Castrovilli to turn in from nine yards. Viola doubled their lead and Castrovilli was again involved. A free-kick was only cleared to the midfielder, who floated a ball to the back post for Nikola Milenkovic’s free header.
Udinese had been pushing and got one back before the break when Rodrigo De Paul pulled back from the right for Stefano Okaka’s diving header. Castrovilli continued his remarkable evening by adding another goal to his tally. He started the move, spread it to the left for Cristiano Biraghi, and then pounced on a lucky ricochet for the return pass, blasting it right-footed into the top corner from just inside the area. It was the first brace of his career. There was more pressure from the visitors that eventually paid off, as Okaka was given too much time and space to prepare his header on a Fernando Forestieri cross from the left.
Fiorentina spent the final minutes pinned back in their half desperately dealing with crosses from all angles but managed to cling on for three precious points. Franck Ribery is ready to return to action for Fiorentina whereas Borja Valero and German Pezzella are injured and are going to miss the Stadio Olimpico clash. The Spaniard is expected to return to action next week. Roma won the last two games against Fiorentina, both with Paulo Fonseca on their bench. The Giallorossi had only managed one point in the previous three meetings.
Fiorentina (3-5-2): Dragowski; Milenkovic, Martinez Quarta, Caceres; Lirola, Bonaventura, Amrabat, Castrovilli, Biraghi; Kouame, Ribery
Suspended:
Injured: German Pezzella, Borja Valero

Both Roma and Fiorentina found the scoring touch the last weekend, they are capable to score against any team and both teams to score seems like the more reasonable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
