Roma will feel comfortable again as they host mid-table Genoa on Sunday afternoon at Stadio Olimpico. Read our reasons for Roma vs Genoa prediction and betting tips.
Paulo Fonseca saw ‘a a great attitude and team spirit’ after Roma won 2-1 away to Fiorentina, reacting to recent setbacks. Leonardo Spinazzola curiously both opened the scoring for the Giallorossi and accidentally got the equalizer with an own goal. “It was a difficult match, we won largely due to the excellent second-half performance,” Fonseca told media. “We had other opportunities and were solid defensively. We needed to get the win this evening. After the defeat to Milan, the team reacted well. We need to understand what we need to improve and how we must react to setbacks. It was a great attitude and team spirit this evening. I think we won an important match for us. We have indeed made mistakes against the big clubs, there’s always something missing, but we have to work on those elements.”
Centre-back Roger Ibanez is a doubt for Roma, who also has several other selection concerns ahead of Genoa's visit. In midweek, top scorer and set-piece specialist Jordan Veretout pulled up in agony and was carried off, with subsequent reports suggesting he has sustained a serious thigh injury which could see the Frenchman miss at least the rest of the month. The matchwinner in Florence, Amadou Diawara, should therefore replace Veretout in midfield, or Lorenzo Pellegrini could alternatively drop back from his more advanced position. Striker Edin Dzeko is set to be sidelined again too, while defender Marash Kumbulla will be unavailable due to a suspension for accumulation of yellow cards and is set to be replaced by fit-again Chris Smalling in the back three.
Roma: Lopez; Mancini, Cristante, Smalling; Karsdorp, Villar, Diawara, Spinazzola; Mkhitaryan, Pellegrini; Mayoral
Davide Ballardini felt Genoa ‘deserved something more’ in the Derby Della Lanterna, as they played a good match against a strong’ Sampdoria. It ended once again in a stalemate when Lorenzo Tonelli’s header canceled out a wonderful Davide Zappacosta solo effort. “We played a good match against a strong team,” Ballardini said at the post-match press conference. “For me, of the two, Genoa were the team that deserved something more for the game we expressed. It’s a good performance, a point and we look forward to the next matches.” Ballardini said Genoa struggled to keep up their rhythm in the second half. “In the second half we didn’t have the continuity of play that we had in the first half,” he said. “This may be because when you play on a Sunday and then Wednesday, even if many of our players played little or were rested, it breaks their week. The regret is not being able to play as well as we did in the first half.”
For the visitors, both Luca Pellegrini and Davide Biraschi are expected to miss the trip to Rome, with Davide Ballardini likely to name a settled side, having previously rested a substantial swathe of first-teamers in the loss to Inter last weekend. Derby hero Davide Zappacosta could switch back to the right flank of Genoa's 3-5-2 though, as Lennart Czyborra returns on the left and Edoardo Goldaniga potentially drops out of the XI.
Genoa: Perin; Masiello, Radovanovic, Criscito; Zappacosta, Strootman, Badelj, Zajc, Czyborra; Shomurodov, Destro

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
