Roma host Napoli at the Stadio Olimpico in the weekend’s big match in Serie A. Read our reasons for Roma vs Napoli prediction and betting tips.
After 2-0 defeat against Parma Paulo Fonseca explained why Roma took a ‘realistic’ approach to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Europa League but also had a worrying revelation about Roger Ibanez. The Giallorossi comfortably swept through to the quarter-finals with a 3-0 home win and 2-1 in Kyiv. It’s the first time Roma has reached the final eight of any European competition since beating Barcelona in the 2017-18 Champions League. “It was important that we start the game well and not concede in the opening 30 minutes,” Fonseca told media. “Shakhtar had the initiative, but we always defended well, then had more of the ball and scoring opportunities in the second half. We played a realistic game, as Roma had never won here before and never reached the Europa League quarter-finals. It won’t be easy for us this season because seven teams are fighting for the top four in Serie A and we’ve got the Europa League too. We want to fight to the end.”
Fonseca did make a rather worrying confession as Ibanez came off at half-time, a good 20 minutes after he felt dizzy following a clash of heads with Marash Kumbulla. “He feels fine now, but he didn’t remember hardly anything that happened in the game. He is a major doubt for the next match.” Roma seems to perform better in Europe than in Serie A this season. Is there a reason for that? “We know in Italy the teams are more tactically-prepared and stronger in defense, whereas there are more spaces in Europe. Now we have to win against Napoli this weekend, do our best, and get right back on track after the setback in Parma.” Roma now has two potential paths to a Champions League spot, either finishing top four in Serie A or winning the Europa League. ''The objective is to achieve them both. We have to go as far as possible in Europe because we’ve proved that we can have our say at this level.”

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis reportedly inspired his players ahead of the 1-0 win over Milan. ‘You are strong, believe in yourself’. Il Corriere Dello Sport reports the patron spoke to the players by phone before the match at San Siro and encouraged the Partenopei to fight for a place in the Champions League. Matteo Politano gave the visitors the win with the only goal in the match after 49 minutes, as the Rossoneri’s injury crisis continued to burden the home side. Napoli is fifth, two points behind Atalanta with one game in hand, and is fully alive in the battle for Champions League football next season. De Laurentiis reportedly called the dressing room ahead of the match and said: “Don’t worry, you will do it. The President is still convinced the Azzurri can achieve the qualification goal and their next match is against direct rivals Roma, who sit sixth and are tied on points with De Laurentiis’ side.
Napoli forward Hirving Lozano will be back at coach Gennaro Gattuso’s disposal. The Partenopei have coped without the Mexican striker for one month due to a muscle injury in his thigh. He comes in time to boost attacking options at the end of the season. Sky Sport Italia reported the Mexican carried out an entire training session with the rest of the group. The broadcaster reveals Kostas Manolas is back too and should be available against his former teammates. Stanislav Lobotka rested from Wednesday and is out with tonsillitis.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
