Few days after the big city derby defeat, Roma returns to action with a last-16 Coppa Italia tie against Spezia on Tuesday.
Paulo Fonseca admitted Roma lost the Derby Della Capitale in the first 25 minutes. ‘It’s difficult to recover if you gift them two goals.’ It was one-way traffic at the Stadio Olimpico, as Roger Ibanez was caught in possession twice in the opening 23 minutes for Ciro Immobile and Luis Alberto goals. “I think in the opening minutes, we had the right approach, but against a side like Lazio, it’s difficult to recover if you gift them two goals,” Fonseca told media after a 3-0 defeat. Lazzari dominated down the flank against Ibanez, also effectively neutralizing Leonardo Spinazzola, who did not help Ibanez when tracking back.
The Giallorossi never mounted any kind of response and Luis Alberto completed his brace in the second half, with Edin Dzeko forcing the only genuine save from Pepe Reina at the 85th minute. “Lazio closes up very well in defense, we passed the ball around without finding a way through. Lazio also deserves credit for that, as they blocked off all the spaces. We intended to attack, but we couldn’t find a breakthrough.”
Lining up similarly to their Europa League outings, a series of Spanish signings are set to start in the cup - with Carles Perez, Borja Mayoral, and Pedro joining Pau Lopez in the XI. Gianluca Mancini will most likely continue in defense, as he is suspended in the league, with Marash Kumbulla and Federico Fazio joining him in the back three. Meanwhile, Bryan Cristante and Amadou Diawara could come into the midfield.
Roma: Lopez; Mancini, Fazio, Kumbulla; Peres, Diawara, Cristante, Spinazzola; Pedro, Perez; Mayoral
Vincenzo Italiano congratulated Spezia for their 0-0 draw against Torino, achieved after downing to 10 men for 82 minutes. ‘We’ve got the right spirit.’ Considering the circumstances, this point is worth its weight in gold, as Spezia was already decimated by injuries and bans going into the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino, then Luca Vignali was sent off at the eighth minute. Despite all of that, they had the best scoring opportunities throughout the game, running a risk only in stoppages when Cristian Ansaldi hit the upright. “I am convinced that going down to 10 men at this level makes it very difficult, but if my team manages to keep a clean sheet and create more scoring opportunities anyway, that means we’ve got the right spirit and unity,” Italiano told media. This is becoming a habit, as the newly-promoted side earned a 2-1 win away to Napoli when down to 10 men earlier this month.
Spezia's Serie A talisman M'Bala Nzola is unlikely to return until the repeat fixture next weekend in the league, so young Roberto Piccoli or Andrey Galabinov should start upfront in Vincenzo Italiano's customary 4-3-3. Both new signing Riccardo Saponara and on-loan Kevin Agudelo could come into the side, while Matteo Ricci and Simone Bastoni return to the squad after overcoming COVID-19.
Spezia: Rafael; Vignali, Chabot, Dell'Orco, Marchizza; Deiola, Pobega, Saponara; Agudelo, Galabinov, Farias

This should be a very interesting match between teams that had different rewards after the last matches. They will meet four days later in the league so coaches will try to earn victory by giving minutes to the players that didn't get enough chances until now. Both teams to score looks like a decent bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
