These sides meet again just days after Spezia knocked Roma out of the Coppa Italia 4-2 in extra time.
Paulo Fonseca is under fire following two disastrous performances in a row, losing 3-0 to city rivals Lazio in Serie A and capitulating in the Coppa on Tuesday night. That match was extraordinary for many reasons, not least the two red cards and the fact Roma would’ve been eliminated anyway for making too many substitutions. Roma team manager Gianluca Gomber and Global Sports Officer Manolo Zubiria reportedly paid for the Coppa Italia disaster against Spezia. The media highlighted reputational damage for La Lupa and the two managers have reportedly been dismissed.
Roma imploded against Spezia, in a game that had everything, including six goals, two red cards in 30 seconds, some incredible misses, and too many substitutions. Pressure mounts on Fonseca’s shoulders after a winless run of three games and two former Juventus coaches are mentioned, Allegri and Sarri, as the two biggest names on the list of candidates. They are still contractually tied to the Bianconeri and want to wait until the summer. Roma could therefore look for a temporary solution, as Walter Mazzarri and Luciano Spalletti are being considered for the position until July. Roma is, however, fourth in Serie A after 18 games, nine points behind league leaders Milan.
Roma (3-4-2-1): Pau Lopez; Kumbulla, Smalling, Ibanez; Karsdorp, Villar, Veretout, Spinazzola; Pellegrini, Mkhitaryan; Dzeko
Suspended: Mancini
Injured: Zaniolo, Mirante, Fazio, Calafiori, Santon
Even without top scorer M’Bala Nzola, Spezia has been revitalized by the return of Andrij Galabinov and the influence of January signing Riccardo Saponara, who bagged a brace in the Coppa midweek. Saponara hailed the Spezia ‘achievement’ of knocking Roma out of the Coppa Italia with a 4-2 win in extra time, including his brace. This was the creative midfielder’s first start for the club and he marked it with two goals, including an outrageous chip lob in extra time. “We came to play with our identity. We showed courage from the start, scored two early goals, proving that Spezia plays football against anyone,” Saponara told media. “We suffered a little in the second half, as Roma are a strong team, but we continued to play our football. They have the quality to find passing channels and create chances out of nothing.
Both teams were prepared to take it to penalties, but Gianluca Mancini and Pau Lopez getting themselves sent off in extra time, with two red cards in the space of 30 seconds, helped the visitors to dominate in the extra time and get a valuable win. Spezia will face Napoli in the Coppa Italia quarter-final on January 27.
Spezia (4-3-3): Provedel; Vignali, Terzi, Erlic, Marchizza; Estevez, Agoume, Pobega; Verde, Piccoli, Gyasi
Suspended: None
Injured: Mattiello, Nzola, Sala Ferrer

This is the first-ever Serie A meeting between the clubs, after Spezia won both Coppa Italia fixtures, on penalties in 2015-16 and in extra time on Tuesday. Roma is under pressure to win but both teams to score is the most reasonable betting option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
