Roma is third in the league table, six points behind leaders AC Milan and they welcome good Verona side to the Stadio Olimpico in their Serie A fixture on Sunday night.
Paulo Fonseca demanded ‘more respect’ for Roma in the media after a 4-3 win over Spezia, but refused to answer questions on his split with Edin Dzeko. ‘We proved we are all together.’ When Lorenzo Pellegrini scored the last-gasp winner for the 4-3 result, sparking wild celebrations, including Fonseca running up the touchline to join the group hug. “It was an emotional moment. It would’ve been an injustice not to win this game, as we deserved to win fully, and it was a moment when we proved that we are all together,” the coach told the media.
Fonseca was repeatedly pressed on the Dzeko situation and would not answer when asked if the striker has played his final game for Roma, or if their rapport is beyond repair. “I already talked about this yesterday, I don’t want to say anything more. I understand your curiosity, but I don’t want to say anything else. “The important thing is what we did here today, a great victory for the team. “I am purely focused on my team. It is difficult to see that Roma is treated differently in the media – not Fonseca, but Roma – acting as if we are bottom of the table. I think Roma deserve more respect. “I don’t pay attention to the media, I am just focused on my work.”
Paulo Fonseca will benefit from the return of goalkeeper Antonio Mirante and Roma's most productive attacking player, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, from injury, with both strong candidates to reclaim a starting jersey. Last week's matchwinner Lorenzo Pellegrini is expected to play through the pain of a thigh strain, but Pedro is set to remain sidelined for now. Upfront, on-loan Borja Mayoral starts again in place of suspended Roman captain Edin Dzeko, who may have made his last appearance for the club he has served so well.
Roma: Mirante; Mancini, Smalling, Ibanez; Karsdorp, Veretout, Villar, Spinazzola; Pellegrini, Mkhitaryan; Mayoral
Ivan Juric believes Kevin Lasagna can ‘grow further’ at Hellas Verona, as the coach works to ‘create stability’ and a future’ at the Bentegodi. The 45-year-old Croatian was appointed head coach of the Gialloblu in July 2019 and has helped Verona establish themselves in the top half of Serie A. This month Stefano Sturaro and Kevin Lasagna have arrived and the coach is pleased to see the club use its resources. “Better late than never,” Juric said at a press conference. “Last year, we did something out of the ordinary, we created a mind-boggling amount of money for a club that didn’t invest as much in the team. We could have done more at the beginning. The basis is to have starters, create a hardcore. In my opinion, even with my impatience, we are doing it. Now, we have a hardcore, we must continue to grow and create stability, a future.”
Juric said he was pleased to see Lasagna arrive from Udinese and believes he will develop at the Bentegodi. “I’m satisfied with Lasagna,” he said. “I think it was the right time for him to move. “Because he had stopped growing and we are convinced he can grow further with us."
The visitors have Giangiacomo Magnani out through suspension, while several others are in doubt due to thigh issues, including Stefano Sturaro (who joined from Genoa with a pre-existing injury), Andrea Favilli, and Ronaldo Vieira. Captain Miguel Veloso and fellow midfielder Marco Benassi remain out with calf problems, but there could be a debut in store for the freshly-acquired Kevin Lasagna - most probably from the bench, as Nikola Kalinic should be given another opportunity as the lone striker in Ivan Juric's 3-4-2-1 formation.
Verona: Silvestri; Dawidowicz, Gunter, Dimarco; Faraoni, Tameze, Ilic, Lazovic; Barak, Zaccagni; Kalinic

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
