Rotherham host Watford at Aesseal New York Stadium (Rotherham) in the 37th round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 7 pm (UK) on Tuesday, March 16. Read our reasons for Rotherham vs Watford prediction and betting tips.
Rotherham might not have played this weekend after their third consecutive match was postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak in their ranks, but the Millers will be keeping an eye on what’s going on with the teams at the bottom of the Championship. Third from the bottom and three points from safety, they need to get something from the fourteen games they have left this season to give themselves a chance of starting next season in the Championship. As for Watford, after securing a crucial 2-1 victory over Cardiff on Saturday and remaining in 2nd place, the Hornets will be looking to make it four wins on the bounce in midweek. While manager Xisco Munoz will be wary of the threats that the Millers possess, his players should prove to be too strong for their counterparts if they perform at their very best.
The Millers currently occupy the final relegation spot in the second tier and are three points from safety – but they have three games in hand over Birmingham one place above them on 35 points. The situation has prompted Aitor Karanka to repeat his concerns about the fact that Rotherham now have three games in hand on his team in the wake of the 1-0 defeat at Barnsley. He may have a point when being worried that the relegation rivals will face opponents with nothing to play for at the end of the season.
Rotherham played their most recent Championship match on March 3 against Sheffield Wed, where Freddie Ladapo's stunning last-minute winner gave 10-man Millers a victory over fellow strugglers in Darren Moore's first game in charge of the Owls. Since then the latest postponement against Coventry leaves the Millers with a scheduling headache to overcome and they face the prospect of having to play a game on a Tuesday and a Thursday, bookended by matches on either weekend.
On the other hand, it’s a fascinating battle for the second spot in the Championship right now and there are several clubs still in the mixer for it, and Watford might just sneak in and claim it. They’ve not been at their fluent best for a large part of this season and it’s only in recent weeks that we’ve seen the Hornets really showcase what they’re capable of. Watford seem to be hitting their best form at the right time, whereas the likes of Brentford and Swansea haven’t looked as assured in recent weeks.
The quality and depth that Watford possess is superb in all honesty for this level, and quality can see them over the line. However, for Watford, emphasis is now on the forthcoming, relatively gentle set of fixtures. They recorded three important wins against Wycombe, Huddersfield, and Cardiff which was much needed after a bump in the road against Bournemouth. Pick up some speed and they head into the big games after Easter with momentum. Fail to deliver and the Hornets will be needing to make up points from a run that will look a lot more daunting.

Rotherham meet Watford having not previously celebrated in the last five head-to-head matches against the Hornets (D1, L4), with their most recent defeat in December in the reverse fixture at the Vicarage Road (2-0). The victory against Sheffield wed ended a run of four straight league defeats for Rotherham and left the Yorkshire side just three points adrift from safety, while Watford are not troubling leaders Norwich in the title race, but are definitely in the mix to secure automatic promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.
After missing the Championship action for three consecutive rounds it is ungrateful to predict whether the hosts will turn up for the game or not, but nevertheless, we expect the Hornets to continue their good run.
