Russia will be looking to make it three wins out of three in the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League when they play host to Turkey at the VTB Arena on Sunday evening.
Russia’s national team lost 1-2 to Sweden in a football friendly at the VEB Arena stadium in Moscow on Thursday. The goals were scored by Aleksandr Sobolev (90’) for Russia and Alexander Isak (21’) and Mattias Johansson (73') for Sweden in the first game by the Russian team attended by fans since November 2019. The game was initially expected to take place in Stockholm on March 28 but was put off due to the coronavirus pandemic. Due to tough restrictions imposed by the Swedish capital’s city authorities, it was decided to hold it in Moscow.
Cherchesov will not be concerned about that result with the Nations League taking priority, and promotion to League A is firmly on the cards should Russia take maximum points from these two fixtures against Turkey and Hungary. Prior to defeat vs Sweden, Russia had won 10 of their last 11 matches, with Belgium being the only team that Russia failed to beat in their qualification group for the European Championships.
In September Russia climbed to the top of the table in Group B3 as Stanislav Cherchesov witnessed his side triumph over Serbia and Hungary, notching up six goals along the way. They are also very prone to stick with the current attacking style of play. Despite failing to find the net in the 3-2 win over Hungary, Zenit attacker Artem Dzyuba is still the key man for this team, his power and football knowledge is making his teammates look better so if he plays on the high level, Russia will surely be dangerous. Ask the Serbian national team about his influence in the 3-1 defeat, he scored a brace and was a man of the match by a mile.
In contrast to Russia, Turkey is winless in this season's tournament having lost to Hungary and drawn with Serbia thus far. As expected, in a friendly vs Germany, Turkey shuffled the team, but national coach Senol Gunes must be satisfied to see his side come away with a share of the spoils in midweek. They made three comebacks in the game against Germany. The last equalizer, which brought the game to 3-3, came during the injury time, they proved to be a much tougher team than ever, responding to the German goals in rapid succession. Ahead of the Nations League game against Russia this Sunday, the national team’s performance was promising.
The counter-pressing strategy of Turkish coach Şenol Güneş is constantly improving. Two of the three goals Turkey scored against Germany were created through counter-pressing, pushing the opponent to make more mistakes during the build-up. As Turkey currently does not have the individual or collective capacity to dominate the game against bigger opponents like Germany, it is best to practice this counter-pressing strategy until next summer.
The three goals conceded should be a warning for Güneş, it is safe to say that consistency on the defensive line is a must, just like Çağlar Söyüncü’s return to the starting 11 against Russia. Ayhan and Söyüncü offer a good central-defense tandem at the moment, which should be preserved against Russia. Against Hungary and Serbia, both defensively oriented teams, Turkey struggled to press their opponent as they did not possess the ball too much. Russia will most probably play like these two. That is why it is crucial for Turkey to stay strong in its defense and hope for some individuals to shine in its offense, like Ozan Tufan and Efecan Karaca against Germany.
Turkey, so far in the Nations League, won one point. In the first match, against Hungary, they played lost 1-0 at home. In the next match, they played 0-0 in Belgrade against Serbia. Turkey had a great opportunity in that game after Aleksandar Kolarov's red card at the start of the second half. Still, they couldn't create any excellent goal-scoring opportunities for the rest of the match. Leicester City duo Caglar Soyuncu and Cengiz Under are expected to come back into the first XI, while Mert Muldur and Zeki Celik are both vying for a start at right-back. Hakan Calhanoglu and Burak Yilmaz were also given the night off against Germany but should return for this one.

It should be a very interesting encounter with both teams trying to score in their own way, Russia through attacking style, Turkey on pressing, so both teams to score is the most preferable option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
