On Sunday, Saint-Etienne will host Lorient at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in their first match of the season after their game vs Marseille was postponed due to coronavirus.
Saint-Ettiene looked good in the Coupe the France final vs PSG in which they lost 1-0. That was one of the first matches after the restart and at the end of July and totally opposed from the finish of the season when they were in trouble and in a brutal fight to avoid relegation. They ended in 17th place and that was far from their expectations, budget, and ambitions to be in the top 10 of Ligue 1.
Saint-Ettiene lost the match and conceded just one goal despite the fact they had a red card in the first half against a team that won all competitions in France and played in the UCL final. The former manager of Lille, Leicester City, and Southampton Claude Puel had more time to work with the squad and besides that game vs PSG, they didn't show enough improvement in friendly matches and their fans are hoping this will change again in the competitive matches. Home team is historically very good on their pitch and Les Vertes fans will be grateful if this continues in the next season. Puel is an experienced coach and he knows the pressure will rise if results don't come so winning against the newly-promoted side is almost a must at home ground.
They lost great central defender Saliba who transferred to Arsenal and he will be replaced by experienced Kolodziejczak but they loaned a very creative attacking midfielder Aouchiche from PSG who can add something in the final third if he gets chance to play. He currently has three players doubtful for the next match, Lois Diony, Zaydou Youssouf, and Kevin Monnet-Paquet.
Lorient Manager Christophe Pelissier was very pleased besides the bench watching his team in a 3-1 win over Strasbourg 3-1 in the first game of the season. Lorient won Ligue 2 and was promoted but also a team that got small chances from the public and media that could survive in this season in this league. The win will give them focus and confidence because that could be key elements in their fight to avoid relegation.
Good preseason matches helped and they stayed unbeaten. In match vs Strasbourg Lorient came from behind after conceding a first-half goal and best player from the last season Yoann Wissa, newcomer Adrian Grbic and Pierre-Yves Hamel all scored in the second half for complete turn round. Despite the big win in the first match, it is almost sure that Lorient will struggle in their attempt to avoid relegation.
Many newly promoted teams often have problems in surpassing the gap between Second and First League because of the smaller budget and less individual quality. Also playing at home and away can always make the difference in performances and Lorient win should be taken with the shadow of a doubt before a stronger run of good results. Their coach could count on all players in the roster and good team chemistry from the last season. Their record signing Adrian Grbic scored on debut and he adapted well after his transfer from Clermont.

Saint-Ettiene always has good quality players in their side in recent years but they changed that in the recent transfer window and they will rely on the experienced coach and team effort. The good start of the season is crucial for coach Puel and the home team win will be our preferable bet for this match.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
