Sampdoria host Cagliari on Sunday evening as guests are trying to win three games in a row. Read our reasons for Sampdoria vs Cagliari prediction and betting tips.
Claudio Ranieri admitted Sampdoria is happy with a point from the Derby Della Lanterna with Genoa after ‘too many errors.’ Lorenzo Tonelli’s header managed to cancel out the Davide Zappacosta opener at Marassi. “We made too many errors, we were frenetic in our passes and our approach, but a point in the derby is fine,” Ranieri told media. “We started strong, then lost our way and were too hasty, which led to mistakes. These were two teams then who wanted to win, but also not run too many risks. It might not have been a scintillating derby, but I still believe a derby played without fans is just the most awful thing in football.”
Sampdoria is still without striker Ernesto Torregrossa, who is nursing a calf injury, while winger Mikkel Damsgaard and midfielder Morten Thorsby are both doubts after suffering from a fever. Experienced striker and top goalscorer Fabio Quagliarella is set to lead the line once again, with Keita Balde likely to feature alongside him in a two-man attack.
Sampdoria: Audero; Bereszynski, Tonelli, Colley, Augello; Candreva, Silva, Ekdal, Jankto; Keita, Quagliarella
Cagliari coach Leonardo Semplici said ‘our safety depends on us’ after securing a second consecutive win against Bologna on Wednesday. The former SPAL coach followed up the 2-0 win over Crotone with another clean sheet and three points against Bologna at the Sardegna Arena. “I liked the lads a lot, I had recommended a change of approach compared to Crotone,” Semplici said at the post-match press conference. “In the second half, we suffered but risked doubling our lead too. Credit must be given to these lads, we are confident. It was important to give continuity to the performance and results.”
The Casteddu climbed one position and leapfrogged Torino in the relegation battle, but the Granata have two games in hand. “Our safety depends on us,” Semplici said. “I have found great availability, these guys are showing me that they are more men than players. With these moral qualities and technical abilities, we can save ourselves. I gave them a couple of principles in the non-possession phase. We haven’t done anything yet, but we are achieving the results. There have been two games where we don’t concede and win. The guys are understanding what I want, even if it’s still early.”
For Cagliari, midfielder Marko Rog (anterior cruciate ligament) and winger Riccardo Sottil (thigh) remain long-term absentees, while both Giovanni Simeone and Daniele Rugani are suffering from bruised thighs and are doubtful for Sunday's match. Charalampos Lykogiannis is back from his one-match suspension and is set to start at left-back, which is likely to see Nahitan Nandez return to a more familiar role in central midfield.
Cagliari: Cragno; Zappa, Godin, Klavan, Lykogiannis; Marin; Nandez, Duncan; Nainggolan; Pedro, Simeone

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
