Coach Stefano Pioli returns to the dugout in Serie A when Milan continue their Serie A season with a trip to Liguria against struggling Sampdoria on Sunday at Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
Claudio Ranieri’s men seemed to have turned things around against Torino last time, but the Granata equalized and claimed a point towards the end of the match in Turin. The Blucerchiati haven’t won in five games across all competitions and are winless in four Serie A games. Sampdoria patron Massimo Ferrero said coach Claudio Ranieri is safe at the Marassi but admitted they had ‘discussed the performance’ against Torino. Andrea Belotti opened the scoring, but Torino needed a Soualiho Meite goal to claim one point, as Antonio Candreva inspired Sampdoria in the second half. It ended in a 2-2 draw at the Grande Torino, as Candreva first scored the equalizer and then set up Fabio Quagliarella’s goal to make it 1-2 before Meite grabbed the equalizer from a corner kick.
Sampdoria (4-4-2): Audero; Bereszynski, Yoshida, Tonelli, Augello; Candreva, Thorsby, Ekdal, Jankto; Gabbiadini, Quagliarella
Suspended: none
Injured: Keita
On a yellow card: Thorsby
Milan is unbeaten and top of the standings after nine games, and with Pioli back in the dugout, the side secured a place in the last 32 of the Europa League with a 4-2 win over Celtic on Thursday. Milan has won their six last away games in Serie A, and have only won seven away games or more on the bounce twice in their history. Norwegian youngster Jens Petter Hauge has grabbed the opportunities in Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s absence and should continue at left in the attacking trident on Sunday, with Alexis Saelemaekers at right.
Milan is having their best start to a season in the three points for a win era, sweeping Fiorentina aside 2-0 despite Bartlomiej Dragowski’s penalty save. The Rossoneri consolidated their lead at the top of the Serie A table with yet another victory at San Siro. Alessio Romagnoli was allowed a free header at the back post to open the scoring on a corner. Dusan Vlahovic’s strike was fingertipped onto the upright by Gianluigi Donnarumma and Franck Kessie converted a penalty for a foul on Alexis Saelemaekers. Theo Hernandez went down under the Martin Caceres challenge for another spot-kick, but this time Dragowski parried from Kessie. Hakan Calhanoglu also hit the woodwork and Donnarumma was again decisive on Franck Ribery.
The Rossoneri have only lost once in 2020-21, but are forced to cope without influential center-back Simon Kjaer against Samp this weekend. The Dane suffered a muscle injury against the Bhoys and must undergo further checks in seven days, meaning Matteo Gabbia will step in next to Alessio Romagnoli.
If Milan score against Sampdoria, the Rossoneri will set a new record of consecutive games with at least one goal in Serie A. The Diavolo have scored in 29 games, matching their current record between 1972 and 1973.
Milan (4-2-3-1): G. Donnarumma; Calabria, Gabbia, Romagnoli, Hernandez; Bennacer, Kessie; Saelemaekers, Calhanoglu, Hauge; Rebic
Suspended: none
Injured: Leao, Ibrahimovic, Kjaer

Sampdoria has problems on and off the pitch as Claudio Ranieri has yet to reach an agreement with the club over a new contract. Milan should win the next game despite the absence of Ibrahimović.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
