Napoli got themselves back on track with Dries Mertens returning from injury, but this is a difficult trip to well-rested Sassuolo. Read our reasons for Sassuolo vs Napoli prediction and betting tips.
Sassuolo’s last game with Torino was postponed due to the Granata COVID outbreak, but they already won 2-0 in Naples back in November and are a different team with Domenico Berardi and Francesco Caputo fit. Last time out, Sassuolo didn’t get a win they deserved against Bologna after a debatable red card for guests left-back Aaron Hickey. It was an unusual match at the Mapei Stadium, as Bologna started aggressively and took the lead through Roberto Soriano after a poor Francesco Magnanelli back-pass. Aaron Hickey saw red on 17 minutes for his late lunge on Mert Muldur, but other than the Francesco Caputo equalizer, there were no more goals. “The game was affected by the red card, which I want to say, in my view was not a red card. Unfortunately, we too have paid for incidents like that with the rules as they currently are,” De Zerbi told media.
Sassuolo’s coach accepted that his team needs to be more deadly in the final third. ‘’If you look at everything that happened after that, we had 31 attempts on goal, but Bologna just defended, whereas with 11 men they would’ve attacked and caused us problems. It would’ve been an entertaining, open game. Where we need to improve is the final ball, the decision when combining with teammates, and some players who came off the bench didn’t have the right attitude, in my view. This generation, unfortunately, doesn’t call for the ball, they don’t talk to each other on the pitch and it’s something that ought to change. The older elements in the squad communicate more. When I talk about the final ball and the shot, I mean there was a lack of quality. On the other hand, these are our characteristics, we can’t just kick a long ball and hope Caputo can knock it down. We have to play with passing, quality, and moving the ball around quickly.”
Sassuolo (4-2-3-1): Consigli; Muldur, Marlon, Ferrari, Rogerio; Obiang, Locatelli; Berardi, Lopez, Djuricic; Caputo
Suspended: None
Injured: Romagna, Bourabia, Boga
Dries Mertens marked his first start in 74 days with a goal, before Matteo Politano bundled over the line and Kalidou Koulibaly saw red as Napoli got back on track against Benevento. The injury crisis began to ease a little bit with Diego Demme and Elseid Hysaj back on the bench, although Victor Osimhen, Hirving Lozano, and Andrea Petagna were still out. It was all Napoli from the get-go with Benevento opting to sit back, defend and occasionally counter. It was Mertens who marked his comeback with the opening goal, as Matteo Politano’s shot was deflected, but turned into an accidental assist, as the Belgian stuck out a foot to redirect from six yards.
Napoli doubled their lead in a somewhat chaotic fashion, as Insigne floated a ball to the back post where it ricocheted off Gaetano Letizia, then off Matteo Politano’s shoulder and over the line. They were queuing up to get on the end of that, with Giovanni Di Lorenzo there too, and there were suspicions of handball, but VAR did not intervene. Kalidou Koulibaly incredibly turned a free header wide from a corner, then his game went from bad to worse, as he received his second entirely avoidable yellow card and was sent off. It means he is suspended for the midweek round against Sassuolo. Despite their victory, Napoli is continuing the press silence, refusing to release coach Gennaro Gattuso, players, or directors to speak with the media.
Napoli (4-3-1-2): Ospina; Di Lorenzo, Rrahmani, Maksimovic, Mario Rui; Fabian Ruiz, Bakayoko; Politano, Zielinski, L Insigne; Mertens
Suspended: Koulibaly
Injured: Manolas, Lozano, Petagna, Osimhen

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
