Both teams are forced to reshuffle due to injury problems and bans, so we could see some very different Sassuolo and Roma line-ups. Read our reasons for Sassuolo vs Roma prediction and betting tips.
International duty has not been kind to Sassuolo, as Domenico Berardi and Francesco Caputo picked up injuries in the Italy camp. Manuel Locatelli played regularly and may well be tired, although his first senior Azzurri goal boosted his confidence. Their last fixture with Inter was postponed due to a COVID outbreak in the Nerazzurri squad. Sassuolo has taken an unusual precautionary step by excluding their Italy internationals from the squad against Roma in the case of COVID-19. The news that four members of the Italian staff tested positive for COVID started alarm bells ringing, especially when Juventus then found Leonardo Bonucci was infected. While other clubs such as Napoli, Roma, and Milan have announced the players who returned from international duty with Italy tested negative, Sassuolo is being extra cautious. A statement released by the club confirms that as a precaution, Sassuolo is leaving out the players who were with the Italy training camp for their next match against Roma. Specifically, those would be Domenico Berardi, Francesco Caputo and Manuel Locatelli. Of the three, only Locatelli was not already injured. Gian Marco Ferrari will also be kept in quarantine, as he was in the Italy squad, even if he did not play.
Sassuolo (4-2-3-1): Consigli; Muldur, Chiriches, Ferrari, Rogerio; Obiang, Lopez; Traore, Djuricic, Boga; Defrel
Suspended: None
Injured: Locatelli, Bourabia, Caputo, Berardi, Romagna
Even with the personnel issues, Fonseca has come under fire for back-to-back defeats against Parma and Napoli. The Giallorossi seem to be patching together a team every week now with whoever is left at Paulo Fonseca’s disposal. The situation is so bad that Federico Fazio should be drafted into defense, while Edin Dzeko seems to be taking back the center-forward spot from Borja Mayoral. The pressure increases for Roma coach Paulo Fonseca, as the owners reportedly met with sporting director Tiago Pinto to discuss the current situation. Fonseca was fuming after the 2-0 defeat to Napoli in Serie A and the media reported the players are perplexed by the choices of the coach. The Portuguese tactician is also very disappointed with the team and the speculation restarts regarding his future in the Italian capital. Roma is sixth in Serie A and local rivals Lazio are breathing down the Giallorossi’s neck.
The coach spoke of a ‘lack of courage’ after the loss to the Partenopei before captain Lorenzo Pellegrini said he doesn’t agree with the coach. The interview with Fonseca showed a different side of the former Shakhtar Donetsk coach, who has not been this hard since he started working in Italy. Media wrote the Friedkin talked about this with Tiago Pinto in a meeting at Trigoria after the match. President Dan Friedkin, who was seen shaking his head during the game, announced with body language the need for a talk where Fonseca didn’t participate. Roma is through to the quarter-finals of the Europa League, but the managers at Roma are taking stock of the situation, analyzing the causes of the different performances in the League compared to the European Cup. The owners are studying emergency solutions given the run-in. Securing a place in the Champions League will be the target, but it becomes more and more difficult to finish the top four in Serie A, whilst the Giallorossi are drawn Dutch giants Ajax in the next round of the Europa League.
Roma (3-4-2-1): Pau Lopez; Mancini, Cristante, Fazio; Karsdorp, Pellegrini, Diawara, Spinazzola; El Shaarawy, Pedro; Dzeko
Suspended: Ibanez, Villar
Injured: Kumbulla, Juan Jesus, Mkhitaryan, Veretout, Smalling, Zaniolo

Roma could fire blanks in three straight Serie A games for the first time since March 1994, or even lose three in a row without finding the net, something that hasn’t happened since March 1985. Bettingkick’s Sassuolo vs Roma prediction is: Both teams to score.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
