Sassuolo entertains Serie B side SPAL in their Coppa Italia last-16 tie at the Mapei Stadium on Thursday.
Roberto De Zerbi confirmed Sassuolo genuinely believed they could beat Juventus, even down to 10 men. ‘I could tell we had the opportunity to do so.’ The Neroverdi will have won themselves some more neutral supporters that evening, as, despite Pedro Obiang’s red card on the stroke of half-time, they continued to play, equalized through Gregoire Defrel, and were only beaten 3-1 late on. Gianluca Frabotta’s low ball from the left was allowed to go past two defenders until Aaron Ramsey turned in. Sassuolo has faltered against the big clubs this season, but always put up a fight. There is a good reason to believe that they changed something from the last season as they pick up many points from the teams that are in the lower tier of Serie A and that the next match against a team from Serie B will confirm that.
The hosts will be without the services of influential forward Domenico Berardi for this game on account of a thigh injury. Mehdi Bourabia did not feature against Juventus, as he's been linked with a move away from the club. Federico Ricci is closing in on a move to Serie B side Monza and may have already played his last game for the club. Filippo Romagna is a long-term absentee. Pedro Obiang's red card in their last league game won't affect his participation in this cup tie.
Sassuolo (4-2-3-1): Andrea Consigli; Mert Muldur, Kaan Ayhan, Gian Marco Ferrari, Rogerio; Francesco Magnanelli, Manuel Locatelli; Gregoire Defrel, Filip Djuricic, Jeremie Boga; Francesco Caputo
SPAL quickly bounced back from a 3-2 loss to Brescia, with the team beating Frosinone on the road in their last Serie B fixture. Their major aim is to find a path to Serie A and with fifth place in the standings they are close to being involved in a fight until the end for the promotion. They have a team mixed with some Serie A veteran as Nenad Tomović, Sergio Floccari, Alberto Paloschi, and Lucas Castro, but on the other end, there are some intriguing players like goalkeeper Demba Thiam, Salvatore and Sebastiano Esposito, Federico Di Francesco so they will be eager to show their class against better rivals. The visitors might be able to welcome back goalkeeper Etrit Berisha in this fixture, as he has resumed training after recovering from COVID-19. Lucas Castro might not be available on account of a knee problem. Federico Viviani's availability also remains in doubt.
SPAL (4-4-2): Demba Thiam; Nenad Tomović, Francesco Vicari, Luca Ranieri, Bartosz Salamon; Simone Missiroli, Mattia Valoti, Marco D'Alessandro, Salvatore Esposito; Sebastiano Esposito, Federico Di Francesco

Sassuolo is in fine form despite Juventus's loss and with their quality and ability to dominate against rivals, this should be an easy home win.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
