Second-placed Sassuolo will try to cement their position on the top of the table when they host Udinese on Friday night.
Sassuolo surged into second place with their surprise victory away to Napoli thanks to a Manuel Locatelli penalty and Maxime Lopez solo effort. It was a particularly surprising result, considering Domenico Berardi, Francesco Caputo, and Filip Djuricic didn’t make the trip to the Stadio San Paolo. Caputo, Đuričić, and Berardi had a wonderful start to the season and they were involved in almost every team goal along with Manuel Locatelli.
Dries Mertens wasted a golden opportunity and Andrea Consigli made big saves, but Locatelli converted a penalty for Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s mistimed tackle on Giacomo Raspadori. There was controversy around the second goal, as while Victor Osimhen complained he’d been pulled back by Marlon, Sassuolo countered and Maxime Lopez scored his debut Serie A strike.
Sassuolo released a statement confirming Filip Djuricic, Lukas Haraslin and Federico Ricci have COVID-19, but Jeremy Toljan has recovered. Two members of staff have tested positive for Coronavirus. Djuricic and Haraslin had already missed Sunday’s 2-0 Serie A victory away to Napoli, although the reason had not been given at the time. Ricci is asymptomatic and has been placed into self-isolation. Toljan has been given the all-clear and he can leave quarantine but is not expected that he could be used in rotation after a long spell without training with the team.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic provided an assist and scored the winner in Milan’s 2-1 away win at Udinese. Franck Kessié broke the deadlock in the first half making the most of a perfect assist of the Swede. Rodrigo De Paul leveled the game from the spot in the second half after a foul of Alessio Romagnoli on Ignacio Pussetto. Ibra’s marvelous bicycle-kick goal gave the Rossoneri their fifth win in the opening six Serie A games of the season. Udinese is left third to bottom after one win and five defeats in six games and regarding their performances they should felt they deserved a better position in the table and more points.
Their effort in a match with Milan was good enough for most of the match but a little hesitation of their goalkeeper took away a well-earned point. The next match against Sassuolo will already be important to try to turn things around. They have problems with keeping the clean sheet, so they changed the formation a little, but they need time and work to be able to fix the mechanisms. They changed many players in the last transfer window so time is also needed for them to get to know their teammates much better in the incoming weeks.
Coach Luca Gotti will have a tough task in searching for the right balance for his team. They don’t allow many goal chances but they always concede goals and offensive and defensive phases have to be more precise. The good news is that Okaka had a great game, he was their point of reference in the attack. In the second half, Udinese gave control to Milan who left a lot of space behind but Lasagna wasn’t dangerous in these circumstances, and he should benefit from open spaces because of his speed and finish.

Sassuolo is playing some wonderful football, with or without their biggest stars. It is not easy to predict are they capable to win again, but both teams to score is a preferable bet in almost any game that Sassuolo plays in the new season.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
