Matthew Hoppe and Robert Lewandowski are the top scorers in the Bundesliga since the turn of the year having each scored five goals in three matches at the start of 2021 ahead of Bayern Munich's trip to Schalke on Sunday.
Schalke finally got their first win of the season on Matchday 15 with a thumping 4-0 win over Hoffenheim. Since then, however, the Royal Blues' struggles have returned with back-to-back defeats. The most recent of those was a deeply painful one as Jan Thielmann fired Koln to victory in the third minute of stoppage time to put the Billy Goats eight points clear of the Royal Blues in the relegation battle. Games against Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, and Union Berlin - as well as Sunday's visit of Bayern - come in the next month for Schalke, and so any points they can muster will feel like gold dust to Christian Gross and his side. Another morale boost for the squad arrived in the week in the form of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who has signed a deal until the end of the season.
The Hunter returns to the side with which he spent seven years and scored 126 goals in almost 250 appearances. Huntelaar has been training individually this week and could play a role from the bench, with Hoppe - who scored his fifth goal in his last three games in the defeat to Koln - and Mark Uth expected to lead the attack. Omar Mascarell came off the bench on Wednesday and could be back to start this weekend, while Gross will be sweating on the fitness of captain Sead Kolasinac who pulled up late on in the midweek game.
Schalke: Fährmann - Becker, Kabak, Nastasic, Kolasinac (c) - Mascarell, Serdar - Raman, Uth, Harit - Hoppe
Out: Bentaleb (not included), Boujellab (ill), Ludewig (foot), Paciencia (knee), Skrzybski (knee)
Doubtful: Huntelaar (calf), Mascarell (thigh), Schöpf (thigh)
Coach: Christian Gross
Bayern has earned hard-fought wins in each of their last two league outings since their defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Matchday 15. It was a 1-0 win over Augsburg in midweek, with Lewandowski scoring the all-important goal from the spot to keep Bayern four points clear at the top of the table ahead of Leipzig. The Pole is on course to break Gerd Müller's 40-goal season record after hitting his 22nd of the season in that win, but he will be looking for support from around him to help make life easier for the defending champions in picking up points in the business end of the campaign.
Lucas Hernandez came in for Alphonso Davies at left-back against Augsburg and could keep his place for the trip to Schalke, while Leroy Sane will be pushing for a start ahead of either Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry - who is without a goal in his last 10 games - should Hansi Flick want to change up the supporting cast of his attack.
Bayern: Neuer (c) - Pavard, Boateng, Alaba, Hernandez - Kimmich, Goretzka - Gnabry, Müller, Coman - Lewandowski
Out: Nianzou (thigh), Zirkzee (suspended)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Hansi Flick

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
