Schalke must be ready for Saturday's relegation six-pointer with Arminia Bielefeld, for their last chance to leave 2020 on a high note.
Schalke have not won in the league since beating Borussia Mönchengladbach on 17 January 2020. Tasmania Berlin holds the Bundesliga record for the longest streak without a win (31 matches, 1965/66). The Royal Blues have the Bundesliga's most porous defense (35 conceded) and are 25 league matches without a clean sheet. They are the worst team at the home table on two points (D2, L3, three scored, 10 against).
Influential midfielder Amine Harit returned to the first-team fold in the midweek clash with Freiburg, following three games on the sidelines. The Morocco international completed 70 minutes but was unable to prevent Schalke from slipping to a 2-0 loss. Harit was Schalke's second-highest league scorer with six goals last season but is currently on a 20-game run without finding the net. The result - their eighth defeat of the league campaign - leaves the Royal Blues without a win in 28 Bundesliga matches, and facing the very real prospect of being bottom of the table at Christmas.
With Goncalo Paciencia and Mark Uth sidelined, Nassim Boujellab assumed lone striker duties on Wednesday - a role that could be reassigned to Steven Skrzybski at the Veltins-Arena. Winger Alessandro Schöpf is in line to start after being used as a second-half substitute against Freiburg, while Killian Ludewig is pushing for a recall at right-back after three matches warming the bench. Rabbi Matondo is a doubt after picking up a knock on only his third appearance of the campaign.
Schalke: Fährmann - Stambouli, Kabak, Sane, Oczipka - Mascarell (c), Serdar - Skrzybski, Boujellab, Raman - Boujellab
Out: Bentaleb (not included), Ibisevic (not included), Paciencia (knee), Rönnow (hamstring), Uth (concussion)
Doubtful: Matondo (knee)
Coach: Manuel Baum
Promoted Bielefeld fell hard to a late Jeffrey Gouweleeuw goal in their defeat to Augsburg on Bundesliga Matchday 12. They were also beaten 2-0 by Freiburg in their previous fixture and, with a huge win at Schalke coupled with a heavy loss for 15th-placed Koln in their trip to title candidates RB Leipzig, will head into the truncated winter break in the relegation zone. Whether that's in their current station in the play-off spot or the automatic drop zone remains to be seen.
Uwe Neuhaus' side has taken a league-low one point from their six away fixtures so far this season, but their 2-1 win over second-bottom Mainz a fortnight ago will only fan the flames of optimism on the road to Gelsenkirchen. Anderson Lucoqui, Nils Seufert, and Cebio Soukou are among the candidates to be rotated back in as Bielefeld step up the hunt for a third win since returning to the top flight as 2 Bundesliga champions in the summer.
Bielefeld: Ortega - Brunner, Van der Hoorn, Nilsson, Lucoqui - Doan, Prietl, Hartel, Soukou - Schipplock, Klos (c)
Out: Behrendt (muscular), Laursen (knee), Maier (knock), Pieper (hamstring), Voglsammer (calf), Yabo (ill)
Doubtful: Prietl (thigh)
Coach: Uwe Neuhaus

Schalke had a disastrous year and the loss at the end will just reflect their results and performances. Bielefeld is not in the form either but if there is any side in this league that they could defeat it is Schalke. Away win is a value betting option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
