Schalke and Freiburg picked up some points lately but they need a big win to turn the page in the new season.
Amine Harit has not featured since Schalke's 2-0 loss to Wolfsburg on Matchday 8, Morocco attacking midfielder one of several who was disciplined by the Royal Blues in the aftermath of that result. Schalke was only a 93rd-minute Marco Richter goal away from sealing their first win in 27 Bundesliga games on Sunday, and although Harit didn't feature in the 2-2 draw against Augsburg WWK Arena, he did take part in team training last week.
His return to match sharpness would be welcome, especially given the likely absence of Mark Uth in the final third. The forward was concussed after a challenge with Felix Uduokhai, but has already returned home after spending the night in the hospital. Further back, first-choice goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow is still struggling with a hamstring problem so long-time Schalke No.1 Ralf Fährmann should keep his place in goal.
Schalke have won only two of their past 10 meetings with Freiburg, both in the 2017/18 season. The last times these teams met in Gelsenkirchen, Freiburg registered their biggest away win against the Royal Blues (0-4). Schalke coach Manuel Baum has won just one of his five Bundesliga meetings with Freiburg.
Schalke: Fährmann - Thiaw, Kabak, Sane, Oczipka - Mascarell (c) - Schöpf, Serdar, Boujellab, Raman - Skrzybski
Out: Bentaleb (not included), Ibisevic (not included), Kutucu (not included), Paciencia (knee), Rönnow (hamstring), Uth (concussion)
Doubtful: Matondo (knee)
Coach: Manuel Baum
Whether Petersen or Ermedin Demirovic will be Fährmann's primary concern at the point of Freiburg's attack remains to be seen, but the rest of Christian Streich's ensemble appears to be relatively settled. Demirovic won praise from the coach after they held Borussia Mönchengladbach to a 2-2 draw, but Petersen has restored the Matchday 11 2-0 win over promoted Arminia Bielefeld. Petersen has a club-record of 91 goals for Freiburg. Current Germany coach Joachim Löw has the next most with 83.
Vincenzo Grifo and his second-half replacement Jeong Woo-Yeong got the goals on Saturday, but many changes after the first victory in 10 league games would be a surprise, even accounting for Englische Woche. Jeong's fellow South Korean Kwon Chang-hoon is also back in training should Grifo and fellow wide man Luca Höler need a rest against Wednesday's hosts.
Freiburg: Müller - Lienhart, Schlotterbeck, Gulde - Schmid, Santamaria, Höfler, Günter (c) - Höler, Petersen, Grifo
Out: Flekken (elbow), Haberer (ankle), Itter (muscular), Keitel (knee), Kübler (groin)
Doubtful: Kwon (not included)
Coach: Christian Streich

Schalke and Freiburg conceded 55 goals from the start of the new season, so both teams to score is a very reasonable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
