Schalke's Matthew Hoppe has four goals from four Bundesliga shots and Koln must keep him quiet on Wednesday afternoon.
Schalke won for the first time in 30 Bundesliga outings 10 days ago, beating Hoffenheim 4-0 fuelled by a Hoppe hat-trick - his first senior goals in the game. He is only two goals away from matching the six he managed in 36 games at the youth level. The 19-year-old Californian was at it again on Sunday, finding the target at Eintracht Frankfurt, although the same could not be said of his team, who fell to a 3-1 loss. The Royal Blues remain rooted to the foot of the table, level on seven points with Mainz but with an inferior goal difference.
Goals scored will improve if Hoppe can keep up his form, while those against looking like they could yet be assuaged following the return of Sead Kolasinac on loan from Arsenal, despite the Frankfurt reverse. Christian Gross is likely to stick with a nominal 4-4-2, if only because he is shorn of alternatives elsewhere, with Omar Mascarell and Nasim Boujellab struggling to be in fit in time. Schalke have had a different coach in each of their last seven top-flight encounters with Koln. Christian Gross will make it eight.
Schalke: Fährmann - Becker, Kabak, Nastasic, Kolasinac (c) - Raman, Stambouli, Serdar, Harit - Hoppe, Uth
Out: Bentaleb (not included), Boujellab (ill), Ludewig (foot), Paciencia (knee), Skrzybski (knee)
Doubtful: Mascarell (thigh), Schöpf (thigh)
Coach: Christian Gross
Koln begins the day in the promotion/relegation play-off spot, with five more points than their hosts but an increasingly alarming run of form. Markus Gisdol's side is without a win in five Bundesliga games stretching back to their 1-0 win over fellow Karneval lovers Mainz in mid-December. They looked assured at the back in the goalless draw with Hertha Berlin on Saturday but rather shorn in attack with Ondrej Duda leading the line in the injury-enforced absences of Sebastian Andersson and Anthony Modeste. Ismail Jakobs is pushing for a start on the left-wing having replaced Jannes Horn after 79 minutes against Hertha.
Koln: T. Horn - Cestic, Bornauw, Czichos - Ehizibue, Skhiri, Hector (c), Jakobs - Wolf, Drexler - Duda
Out: Andersson (knee), Kainz (knee)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Markus Gisdol

Koln is unbeaten in six matches with the Royal Blues, winning twice. It's their best run against Schalke since the 1960s but Schalke has picked up six points to Koln's four over their last four fixtures. The home team could steal a valuable win here.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
