Rock-bottom Schalke will be hoping Lucas Alario misses out on visiting Bayer Leverkusen at the Veltins-Arena on Sunday.
Schalke need all the help they can get in the new season. The Royal Blues are the last team in the standings on three points after nine rounds of fixtures, last weekend's 4-1 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach making it 25 league games without a win for the Ruhr club. They've conceded a league-high 28 goals so far, scoring just six. Schalke are second to Tasmania Berlin in the longest winless streak record books (31 matches). Tasmania had also scored six and conceded 28, nine matches into their only season in the Bundesliga. Like Tasmania, the other seven Bundesliga clubs with six goals for and 28 against after nine rounds of fixtures were all relegated. Schalke are not helped by their concession of a league-high 11 goals from set-pieces so far this season.
Suat Serdar, the club's seven-goal top scorer from midfield in 2019/20, has started the last two following injury, but influential defender Salif Sane and Eintracht Frankfurt loanee Goncalo Paciencia remain on the sidelines with knee problems. American Matthew Hoppe was handed a surprise debut against Gladbach after being called up from the U23s. He should make the squad again, while left-back Bastian Oczipka will be given until the last minute to prove his fitness. Steven Skrzybski could partner Mark Uth and Benito Raman - on target last time out - in the attack.
Schalke: Rönnow - Thiaw, Kabak, Nastasic - Ludewig, Mascarell (c), Serdar, Oczipka - Uth - Skrzybski, Raman
Out: Bentaleb (not included), Harit (not included), Ibisevic (not included), Paciencia (knee), Sane (knee)
Doubtful: Fährmann (groin), Kutucu (not included), Matondo (knee)
Coach: Manuel Baum
One of only two unbeaten teams left in this season's Bundesliga, Leverkusen are Schalke's opposites in the form table. Peter Bosz's side missed the chance to go second in their goalless draw with Hertha Berlin, but begin the weekend firmly in the hunt at the summit, only three points adrift of leaders Bayern Munich. Bayer is also unbeaten on the last six trips to Schalke, claiming 16 points. Leverkusen has won their last three away games in a row and is unbeaten across the first nine matches of a season for the third time in their history.
Ten-goal top scorer Alario's presence was sorely missed against Hertha, but not in Nice on Thursday. Die Werkself ran out 3-2 winners to seal their place in the UEFA Europa League last 32 with a game to spare. Alario has scored seven times in as many league appearances for Leverkusen this season. Schalke's top scorer Uth has struck twice in that time.
Edmond Tapsoba, Florian Wirtz, and Leon Bailey are all expected to return to the starting line-up after coming off the bench in Nice. If Alario doesn't make the grade, Patrik Schick will almost certainly continue in attack. Defender Sven Bender is a doubt, but Daley Sinkgraven should resume duties at left-back. Club captain Charles Aranguiz is still out with a muscle injury sustained in October.
Leverkusen: Hradecky - L. Bender (c), Tah, Tapsoba, Sinkgraven - Wirtz, Baumgartlinger, Amiri - Bailey, Schick, Diaby
Out: Aranguiz (Achilles tendon), Arias (ankle), Palacios (back), Paulinho (knee)
Doubtful: Alario (knee), S. Bender (ankle)
Coach: Peter Bosz

Leverkusen is a firm favorite to win the next game. They will have some fatigue issues because of the tough schedule but they have a big roster to rotate. Away win will be a popular bet on Sunday.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
