Despite last weekend's own goal in a heavy defeat, rock-bottom Schalke will look to Shkodran Mustafi to provide the foundation for a much-needed win against out-of-sorts Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday. Read our reasons for Schalke vs M'gladbach prediction and betting tips.
"We still believe," Mustafi told the media following Schalke's 5-0 loss to Wolfsburg last weekend. The Arsenal-owned 2014 FIFA World Cup winner scored an own goal as the Royal Blues slipped to their 17th league defeat of a campaign that, barring a dramatic about-turn in fortunes, is on course to end in relegation to Germany's second tier. They're on their fifth coach of the season in Dimitrios Grammozis and, with nine rounds of fixtures remaining, trail the teams directly above them by 11 points - effectively 12 given their vastly inferior goal difference of -50.
Everything is going against Die Knappen, not least an absentee list comprising the first-choice goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann and 10 outfield players. Matthew Hoppe could be recalled in the attack in a bid to instigate Schalke's Great Escape, after dropping to the bench against Wolfsburg. The American scored a hat-trick against Hoffenheim on Matchday 15 in what remains the club's only league win since beating Gladbach in January of last season and is their five-goal leading marksman so far this term. Fellow forwards Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Goncalo Paciencia have completed parts of training this week, but the visit of Gladbach is likely to come too soon for them.
Schalke: Rönnow - Becker, Mustafi, Thiaw - William, Serdar, Kolasinac (c), Calhanoglu - Harit - Hoppe, Raman
Out: Bentaleb (groin), Boujellab (ankle), Fährmann (rib), Ludewig (foot), Mendyl (ankle), Nastasic (calf), Sane (knee), Skrzybski (knee), Uth (thigh)
Doubtful: Huntelaar (calf), Paciencia (knee)
Coach: Dimitrios Grammozis
Now might be a good time for Schalke to face Gladbach, depending on which way you look at it. The Foals have been in free fall of late, losing seven competitive matches on the spin. They've tumbled down the Bundesliga standings to 10th, whilst bowing out of the DFB Cup and UEFA Champions League along the way. Needless to say, their chances of playing in Europe again next season are hanging by the thinnest of threads. Head coach Marco Rose, who will take over at Borussia Dortmund in the summer, insists "there are no big problems" within the side, instead, pointing to the "little details" he hopes will get them back on the winning horse.
Left-back Ramy Bensebaini could be one of them, the Algerian having returned to action in the midweek defeat to Manchester City. Despite the 2-0 final scoreline, Breel Embolo put in a strong shift in the lone striker's role that Alassane Plea occupied in last Friday's 3-1 loss to Augsburg, and could retain his place against his former club. Christoph Kramer, Valentino Lazaro, and Hannes Wolf are all options to be rotated in, meanwhile.
Gladbach: Sommer - Lainer, Ginter, Elvedi, Bensebaini - Kramer, Neuhaus - Hofmann, Stindl (c), Thuram - Embolo

Doubtful: -
Coach: Marco Rose

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
