Both Schalke and Mainz need a victory to give their survival hope a bigger chance after Friday's relegation six-pointer. Read our reasons for Schalke vs Mainz prediction and betting tips.
Matthew Hoppe was noted as the potential savior of Schalke's season when he scored a hat-trick against Hoffenheim on Matchday 15, landing the Royal Blues a first Bundesliga win in 30 attempts stretching back a year. The 19-year-old struck again in losing efforts to Eintracht Frankfurt and Cologne, but old habits die hard when you're fighting for your top-flight lives. Schalke has taken just two points from eight matches since beating Hoffenheim 4-0, losing six. Last Saturday's heavy 5-1 defeat to VfB Stuttgart cost Christian Gross his job, the club's fourth head coach of the campaign leaving Die Knappen some eight points adrift of second-bottom Mainz and nine behind Arminia Bielefeld in the relegation play-off spot - effectively 10 given their league-worst -45 goal difference.
Dimitrios Grammozis has stepped into the void, but his task is not made any easier by a lengthy injury list that includes goalkeepers Ralf Fährmann and Frederik Ronnow, defenders Matija Nastasic and Salif Sane, and forwards Mark Uth and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. Sead Kolasinac's goal in the defeat to Stuttgart was his first in the Bundesliga since March 2017, when the Arsenal-owned man bagged the winner against Mainz. Huntelaar has scored six times in nine career meetings with Mainz, including a hat-trick in a 4-1 home win in 2014/15.
Schalke: Langer - Becker, Mustafi, Thiaw, Kolasinac (c) - Stambouli, Bentaleb - Schöpf, Serdar, Harit - Hoppe
Out: Fährmann (rib), Huntelaar (calf), Ludewig (foot), Nastasic (calf), Paciencia (knee), Rönnow (groin), Sane (knee), Skrzybski (knee), Uth (thigh)
Doubtful: Boujellab (ankle)
Coach: Dimitrios Grammozis
The managerial merry-go-round has been in full swing at Mainz, though they appear to have made it a case of third time lucky with the January appointment of former player and youth boss Bo Svensson. Following a three-game process that yielded a point away to Borussia Dortmund, the 05ers have won three and drawn one of their last six to pull to within a point of promoted Bielefeld, with 11 rounds fixtures remaining. If results go their way this weekend, they could climb out of the automatic drop zone for the first time since the opening weekend of the campaign.
Midfielder Kevin Stöger and forward Karim Onisiwo are among the players to have benefited from Svensson's appointment. The duo is expected to retain their places in Gelsenkirchen, while Cardiff City-owned striker Patrick Glatzel is in line to make his full Bundesliga debut following four successive substitute appearances. Former Schalke man Adam Szalai is the chief candidate to make a way in the only projected change from the team that lost 1-0 to Augsburg last time out.
Mainz: Zentner - St. Juste, Bell, Niakhate - da Costa, Barreiro, Latza (c), Mwene - Stöger - Glatzel, Onisiwo
Out: Fernandes (ankle)
Doubtful: Kohr (ill)
Coach: Bo Svensson

Despite claiming nine of their 17 points so far this season on the road, the 05ers rank as the third-worst travelers in the division ahead of Schalke and Bielefeld. BettingKick’s Schalke vs Mainz prediction is a Home team win.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
