A leaky Schalke defense will try to contain a Union Berlin who could hand a debut to Loris Karius in the final Matchday 4 fixture on Sunday.
It's been a trying start to the season for the Royal Blues, with three defeats and 15 goals leaving them bottom of the table. Manuel Baum is the new man at the helm charged with turning things around, and he faced a 4-0 defeat to RB Leipzig on Matchday 3. Baum’s debut loss was the heaviest of any first-time Schalke coach since Jörg Berger suffered a 5-1 reverse at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen in October 1993.
Deadline-day signing Killian Ludewig is expected to go straight into the starting line-up as Baum looks to plug a vulnerable defense deprived of the suspended Kabak, while Frederik Rönnow is in line to make his Schalke bow following an injury to first-choice goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann. Suat Serdar was Schalke's top scorer last term with seven goals, but he is sidelined through injury for this one, so the hosts will be looking to forwards Goncalo Paciencia, Mark Uth, and Benito Raman to add to the team's solitary goal in 2020/21. Schalke will set an unwanted club record of seven successive Bundesliga defeats if they lose.
Schalke: Rönnow - Ludewig, Sane, Nastasic, Oczipka - Mascarell (c), Bentaleb - Schöpf, Uth, Raman - Paciencia
Out: Fährmann (groin), Kabak (suspended), Serdar (thigh)

Coach: Manuel Baum
Union will be full of optimism after a respectable draw away to Borussia Mönchengladbach with their first win of the season on Matchday 3, a big 4-0 win vs Mainz. Summer signing Max Kruse grabbed his first goal for the club in that win and he should lead the line again here, especially with fellow forward Anthony Ujah still injured. Kruse has registered five goals and eight assists in 16 career meetings with Schalke.
Karius, on loan from Liverpool, played in a friendly against Hannover during the international break, but he may not displace Andreas Luthe quite yet. Nico Schlotterbeck has been an integral part of defense but has joined veteran midfielder Christian Genter in the treatment room, so Niko Gießelmann could take his place in the backline. They also have some great substitutes, all eight of Joel Pohjanpalo's Bundesliga goals to date have come from the bench. The Union is the new season’s hardest-running Bundesliga team, averaging 75.5 miles per game. Schalke have covered the fewest miles (66.7).
Union: Luthe - Friedrich, Knoche, Gießelmann - Trimmel (c), Prömel, Andrich, Lenz - Becker, Bülter - Kruse
Out: Gentner (calf), Schlotterbeck (thigh), Ujah (knee)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Urs Fischer

Schalke is down and out in 2020 and that trend is very hard to turn around. They are lacking confidence and team chemistry and that are the main reasons for the Union's success. The away team should not lose the next game.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
