Schalke is still waiting for their first win but playing against Wolfsburg at the Veltins-Arena on Saturday is not an ideal chance for the first three points in the season.
Wanted central defender Ozan Kabak returned to the Schalke defense following a four-match suspension in the Royal Blues' 2-2 draw with bottom club Mainz. Nineteen-year-old Thiaw made way, despite impressing in the Turkey international's absence and scoring the opening goal in the 1-1 draw at home to promoted VfB Stuttgart a week earlier. Head coach Manuel Baum will welcome the healthy competition, but he is likely to stick with experience as Schalke continue their search for a first Bundesliga win in 23 matches. Three draws in the last four, point to an improvement - depending on results elsewhere, another positive result could lift them out of the relegation zone for the first time this season.
Baum has still faith in Frederik Rönnow who will continue in goal at the expense of Ralf Fährmann, while homegrown talent Can Bozdogan is pushing for a recall in the center of midfield after beginning the Mainz stalemate on the bench. Rönnow has averaged 5.3 saves per game since replacing the injured Fährmann. The former No.1's average had been 3.6. Schalke have gone an unwanted club record 23 Bundesliga games without a win. Only Tasmania Berlin - winless in 31 matches in 1965/66 - have ever endured a longer run.
Schalke: Rönnow - Kabak, Sane, Nastasic - Mascarell (c) - Ludewig, Harit, Bozdogan, Oczipka - Paciencia, Uth

Doubtful: Schöpf (calf)

Schalke's on-going struggles stand in contrast to Wolfsburg's great start to 2020/21. Surviving a late scare against Hoffenheim - Koen Casteels saved a last-gasp Munas Dabbur penalty - the Wolves extended their run as one of only two unbeaten teams left in this season's Bundesliga to seven matches courtesy of a 2-1 home win. The result moved Oliver Glasner's stubborn troupe up to sixth, only four points outside the UEFA Champions League places. Wolfsburg and Bayer Leverkusen are the only two teams yet to taste defeat in the Bundesliga this season.
Ridle Baku has been an instant hit at right-back since making the switch from Mainz, earning a first Germany cap for his efforts during the November international break. Centre-back Maxence Lacroix – another summer signing - picked up a knock in last weekend's club-friendly draw with Hannover, but should be fit to start. Dynamo Moscow loanee Maximilian Philipp will likely continue in attack after registering two assists in his last two league outings.
Only second-placed RB Leipzig have conceded fewer goals (four) than Wolfsburg's five against. At the other end, the Wolves' haul of seven scored is a league third-lowest. The goals scored column should improve if Wout Weghorst is involved: the Dutchman has scored three in his last four.
Wolfsburg: Casteels - Baku, Lacroix, Brooks, Roussillon - Guilavogui (c), Arnold - Steffen, Philipp, Brekalo - Weghorst
Out: Pongracic (not included)
Doubtful: Bruma (thigh), Ginczek (muscular), Otavio (hamstring)
Coach: Oliver Glasner

Schalke is improving, but not enough to win in the Bundesliga. Against the team that just don't know how to lose, could make them more nervous and vulnerable. Wolfsburg should use their confidence and great set-pieces to continue unbeaten run and to pick up a valuable away win.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
