Scotland host Austria at the Hampden Park (Glasgow) in the Group F 1st round match of the UEFA World Cup qualifications and the game kicks of at 7.45 pm (UK) on Thursday, March 25th. Read our reasons for Scotland vs Austria prediction and betting tips.
Scotland and Austria kick off their World Cup qualifying campaigns at Hampden as planned after Austria opted against requesting a change of venue. The decision means Scotland's opponents will be severely weakened for next Thursday's game as their German-based players are not expected to travel to Scotland as they would have to quarantine for 14 days when they returned to their clubs. The last time Scotland played Austria in a competitive game was during the qualifying campaign for the 1998 World Cup in France, which was the last time either side made it to a World Cup.
Scotland will no doubt still be on a high from reaching their first major tournament since 1998 when booking a place at Euro 2020 in dramatic fashion. After finishing a distant third behind Belgium and Russia in their pool, the Scots enjoyed penalty shoot-out wins over Israel and Serbia in the play-offs. There was also no disgrace in finishing second to the Czech Republic in a Nations League pool which featured Israel and Slovakia, as well.
Clarke’s men started that campaign strongly before closing with a couple of frustrating 1-0 defeats on the road following the Serbia thriller in Belgrade. This represents another decent chance of progressing, as Denmark are comfortably the weakest of the top seeds in 10 European groups. Israel, Faroe Islands and Moldova make up the numbers, so kicking off by sharing the spoils here at least would be a solid enough start.
On the other hand, Austria finished second to Poland in their Euro 2020 pool, with just one goal scored in two close encounters with the table toppers. Elsewhere, there were four home wins over North Macedonia, Slovenia, Israel, and Latvia, plus two away victories and a couple of defeats on the road. The Nations League brought more success, with Das Team heading a B-level group in front of Norway, Romania, and Northern Ireland.
There were fears that head coach Franco Foda would be without 19 Germany-based players for this trip because of quarantine regulations. But a decision late on Friday evening ensured Austria will have the likes of Bayern Munich defender David Alaba and RB Leipzig forward Marcel Sabitzer available. Austria would have been favoured heavily against Scotland in recent years but the home side have made significant improvements under Steve Clarke, being unbeaten in their last six matches at Hampden Park.

Scotland meet Austria for the first time since a friendly in May 2007. The two sides have met in two World Cup qualifying campaigns - for the 1970 and 1998 finals and, on both occasions, Scotland won their home game against Austria.
Scotland didn’t lose any of their five home qualifying matches in 2018 World Cup qualifying (W3, D2), with their last home defeat in a World Cup qualifier coming back in September 2013 against Belgium. Meanwhile, Austria won all four of their away matches during 2020 and could win five in a row for the first time since a run of eight consecutive victories on the road between October 2013 and September 2016.
This has all the makings of being a close encounter, so the BettingKick’s Scotland vs Austria prediction is going for a draw.
