Scotland is ready for a massive night at Hampden Park as they prepare to host Israel in their European Championship play-off semi-final.
The previous edition of the Nations League saw both Scotland and Israel promoted from League C into League B after finishing first and second in a group that also featured Albania. The Scots have started to find some form under manager Steve Clarke and will be determined to take a step closer to ending a 22-year wait to reach the finals of a major tournament for the first time since the 1998 World Cup. If they defeat Israel at Hampden Park they face either Norway or Serbia next month to clinch a place at next summer’s finals. Clarke has a team featuring Premier League players such as Scott McTominay, Andrew Robertson, Kieran Tierney, and John McGinn, and his side built some confidence before the next game. Clarke, who impressed at Kilmarnock before taking on the national job, after losing four in the row, both home and away to Belgium and Russia – they have won four and drawn one of the last five matches.
The draw came against Thursday night’s opponents Israel in the Nations League at Hampden last month. Ryan Christie gave the Scots a first-half lead from the penalty spot, but they failed to kill off the game and Eran Zahavi’s goal earned Israel a point. As well as playing out a draw with Israel in their first match back after a 10-month hiatus, Scotland also beat the Czech Republic's reserves 2-1 in Olomouc. The Czechs had to field an entirely new squad of players due to coronavirus restrictions and Scotland just about got the job done to top their Nations League group.
Clarke will be more than satisfied that midfielder McGinn and left-back Tierney returned from the injury. Sheffield United striker Oli McBurnie will be unavailable after withdrawing from the squad with an injury.
Scotland (4-1-3-2): David Marshall, Kieran Tierney, Declan Gallagher, Scott McKenna, Andrew Robertson, Scott McTominay, Callum McGregor, John McGinn, Ryan Christie, James Forrest, Oliver Burke
Israel is also having to do things the hard way, struggled during Euro 2020 qualifying, finishing fifth in their group behind Poland, Austria, North Macedonia, and Slovenia. Like Scotland, they had a half-decent Nations League campaign to fall back on. The Blue and Whites drew 1-1 with Slovakia in their most recent match four weeks ago and have now won just one of their last nine matches since June 2019.
As Israel showed at Hampden Park last month, though, they certainly cannot be taken lightly in this one-legged semi-final, particularly when the stakes are so high.
Israel had their last victory coming against Latvia in October 2019. Before last month’s draw in Glasgow, their previous visit to Scotland ended in a 3-2 defeat in November 2018. They are yet to qualify for the final stages of the European Championship, but they made it to the quarter-finals of the Olympics on two occasions (1968, 1976).
Left-back Taleb Tawatha and central midfielder Dor Peretz will play no part, forcing Willibald Ruttensteiner to shuffle his pack. Maccabi Tel Aviv's Mohammad Abu Fani and Dan Bitton have been called up for the first time.
Israel (3-5-2): Ofir Marciano, Eli Dasa, Eitan Tibi, Taleb Tawatha, Nir Bitton, Bibras Natkho, Dan Glazer, Ilay Elmkies, Shon Weissman, Eran Zahavi, Moanes Dabour

Both teams to score is are our preferable bet. Hosts will try to exploit the home ground and familiar environment but visitors have great attacking power with Zahavi and Dabour.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
