Scotland and Slovakia will face off in a UEFA Nations League clash at Hampden Park on Sunday after progressing to the final play-offs game for the EURO 2020.
Scotland is now just one game away from qualifying for a major tournament for the first time since 1998 thanks to their penalty-shootout win over Israel. Kenny McLean scored the decisive spot-kick to set up a one-off tie with Serbia in Belgrade next month. After a goalless 120 minutes, the Scots converted all five of their penalties, with Kenny McLean scoring the winner after David Marshall saved Eran Zahavi's first spot-kick for Israel.
Scotland has gone six games without defeat in all competitions (W4 D2) for the first time since October 2017 under Gordon Strachan (a run of seven). Despite being 29 shots in this game only one landed on target (Eran Zahavi’s attempt for Israel in the 72nd minute). After having 17 attempts, Scotland failed to land a single shot on target in a home game for the first time since September 2013 against Belgium.
Steve Clarke will inevitably have one eye on that biggest game in a generation for Scotland, and he will want to carry some momentum into the contest. They were hit with a major blow ahead of the Israel match as Stuart Armstrong tested positive for coronavirus, and they also lost Kieran Tierney and Ryan Christie after coming into close contact with him. All three remain absent for the Nations League double-header with Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Clarke stuck with his three-man backline against Israel and that is likely to remain the case on Sunday, though changes can be expected in terms of personnel.
Slovakia progressed to the play-off final for the next summer's European Championships after a 0-0 draw in Bratislava and beating the Republic of Ireland on penalties. Alan Browne had golden chances to win it for the visitors in open play, but the Preston midfielder and Matt Doherty missed the crucial penalties as the hosts prevailed 4-2 in the shootout. Slovakia progresses to face Northern Ireland for a place in next summer's tournament. Pavel Hapal was able to include returning skipper Marek Hamsik in his starting line-up at the Narodny Stadium but was without Milan Skriniar and Stanislav Lobotka because of coronavirus restrictions and David Hancko through injury. Slovakia didn't threaten until first-half stoppage time when Darren Randolph saved well low down from Ondrej Duda, and from the ensuing corner, the Cologne midfielder's overhead kick flashed a yard wide of the post. Lukas Haraslin who came as a substitute in the second half took Hamsik's pass, cut inside Doherty but his shot was brilliantly cleared off the line by Shane Duffy.
With the contest heading for extra time, the visitors ought to have won it when McGoldrick sent Callum Robinson clear of the last defender. Having unselfishly teed up Robbie Brady for the cross, Hourihane was unable to direct the ball over the line from close range as his shot was blocked by Juraj Kucka. Slovakia was without their No 1 Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka with an injury but the Fulham goalkeeper Rodak rose to the occasion to send his country to within 90 minutes of their second successive European Championships. He won his duel with Browne, first preserving his clean sheet before guessing right to hand the hosts the initiative in the shootout.
Slovakia is the bottom of the four-team group following a 3-1 loss to the full-strength Czech Republic and a 1-1 draw in Israel. Pavel Hapal's men face relegation to League C as things stand, and without a win in normal time in six of their last seven matches. Hapal is expected to bring in some fresh legs for this match at Hampden Park. Robert Mak and Lukas Haraslin are among those in contention to return to the XI after finding themselves on the bench in midweek.

This is the game where we don't expect many goals because both teams have problems finding the net and they are without great goalscoring treat. Under 2,5 goals must be the most reasonable option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
