Serbia host Portugal at Rajko Mitic Stadium (Belgrade) in the Group A 2nd round match of the UEFA World Cup qualifications and the game kicks of at 7.45 pm (UK) on Saturday, March 27th. Read our reasons for Serbia vs Portugal prediction and betting tips.
Three pieces of class finishing from Serbia in a 3-2 win dashed the Republic of Ireland’s giddy hopes of starting their World Cup qualification campaign with a win in Belgrade on Wednesday night and Portugal is next in line to visit Belgrade after all but convincing 1-0 win against Azerbaijan, courtesy of an own goal. For both Serbia and Portugal, the three points were ultimately all that mattered on the night, as it looks likely that the two sides will battle it out between themselves for the first two places in the group.
Mitrovic has become his country's joint top scorer with a superb brace off the bench after Dusan Vlahovic cancelled out Alan Browne's header in the Group A clash in midweek. The Fulham striker hasn't found the back of the net in the Premier League since September but turned the match around with his double strike, a delightful lob followed by a trademark header. Mitrovic did concede it was a patchy performance by Serbia, who failed to trouble Irish goalkeeper Mark Travers before the 40th-minute equaliser.
It was a debut for Dragan Stojković, the new head coach and a big name of Serbian and Yugoslav football, who was delighted to record the first victory for Serbia at the start of some qualification campaign in the last 11 years. Serbia's three goals in midweek see them sit atop the rankings after the first match, although they are only above Portugal on goals scored ahead of a mouthwatering contest, and the two goals they shipped on the night ended a run of three consecutive clean sheets for the hosts across all competitions.
On the other hand, Portugal produced a rather bland performance but managed to get the better of Azerbaijan thanks to a fumble from Maksim Medvedev who put the ball in his own net after a mix-up with the goalkeeper. More than anything, Portugal's display reeked of rustiness. They had plenty of chances to extend their lead but just couldn't find the back of the net. Bruno Fernandes was easily Portugal's best player on the night, keeping the Azerbaijan defenders on their toes throughout the match.
It was hardly a morale-boosting performance from the current European champions, but not a single season or tournament has gone by where a team has not had to win ugly to seal progress or be crowned champions. Portugal have now won four of their last five matches across all competitions and kept their sixth clean sheet from eight games. They are favourites to top Group A and this could very well be their toughest game in the group stage.

Serbia meet Portugal having previously clashed six times to date. Serbia are yet to register a win over their Saturday opponents who have three wins to their name, while the other three games have ended as draws. The last time these two sides met was in September 2019 when Portugal duly won the match 4-2.
Serbia is without a win against the Iberian nation and while Santos's men cannot expect to cruise to victory this weekend, they are the favourites to scrape a narrow win and leapfrog their opponents in the table.
