Serbia will host Scotland on Thursday for a one-off match with a place at next summer’s European Championships on the line.
Ljubiša Tumbaković and his Serbia side who finished third in Group B, just three points behind Portugal, and beat Norway 2-1 in the previous playoff round are under pressure to make another trip to the big tournament after reaching out to the World Cup in Russia. Serbia has never qualified for a European Championship as an independent nation and it would be a big step forward for football in this country after the recent success of Red Star and Partizan in UCL and UEL.
Serbia managed what so many before them have failed to do: keep Erling Haaland off the scoresheet and confidence is very high. Serbia edged out Norway 2-1 via extra-time in Oslo with both goals scored by Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. They have a very strong and experienced unit with the most players in the best years that can continue what they did in Oslo.
They could only manage to finish third in the qualification campaign in Group ‘B’ behind Ukraine and Portugal finishing with four wins, two draws, and two losses. Equally worrying is their recent form that has seen no wins in their last six matches during regular time, losing two and drawing four. Ljubisa Tumbakovic has left Nikola Maksimovic and Adem Ljajic out of the squad, while Bundesliga ace Filip Kostic has overcome his injury. Aleksandar Mitrovic has scored 10 goals in Euro qualifying - behind only Harry Kane (12), Cristiano Ronaldo, and Eran Zahavi (11 each). Milos Veljkovic and Filip Djuricic will definitely play no part, however, with the latter testing positive for coronavirus.
Serbia (3-4-2-1): Predrag Rajkovic, Nikola Milenkovic, Stefan Mitrovic, Aleksandar Kolarov, Darko Lazovic, Nemanja Maksimovic, Sasa Lukic, Mihailo Ristic, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Mijat Gacinovic, Aleksandar Mitrovic
After finishing third in Group I, Steve Clarke’s men made it past Israel on penalties in their first playoff match and are now just one more victory away from reaching their first major tournament since the 1998 World Cup — and their first Euros since 1996.
Scotland needed penalties to go past Israel in the play-offs after being held to a goalless draw at the regular time. Before their match against Israel, Scotland has won their last three Euro qualifying matches, but have otherwise struggled in the qualification campaign. Scotland finished third behind Belgium and Russia in Group ‘I’ with five wins and losses each. Losing all four matches against those above them has hurt Scotland’s chances.
Scotland has hit form at the perfect time, with that one of seven victories in an eight-match unbeaten run spanning back to October 2019. Not since September 1976, when going nine without defeat under Willie Ormond, have the Tartan Army enjoyed a better run. They have kept three successive clean sheets, too, and doing likewise on Thursday evening may well prove key to their hopes of qualifying for the rescheduled Euro 2020 finals.
Scotland will be without Ryan Fraser and Grant Hanley for their trip to Belgrade after both players pulled out of the squad with injuries. Fraser's absence could mean Ryan Christie partnering striker Lyndon Dykes, who has scored twice in five appearances at the international level. Kieran Tierney is available for Clarke's men once again and will likely join Scott McKenna and Scott McTominay in a back three. Midfielder John McGinn is also raring to go as he looks to build on a return of six goals and one assist in four European Championship qualifying appearances.
Scotland (3-4-1-2): David Marshall, Scott McTominay, Liam Cooper, Kieran Tierney, Stephen O'Donnell, Ryan Jack, Callum McGregor, Andrew Robertson, John McGinn, Lyndon Dykes, Oli McBurnie

This is the most important match for both sides in their recent history and the stake is really high. Serbia is a more talented side but Scotland has better momentum. The home team is our preferable bet because Serbia players like Lazović and Lukić are in form of their life and can make a difference.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
