Sevilla and Roma will meet in Europa League last 16 round and the winner of the matchup will be decided in just one game that will be held in the German city of Duisburg. Both teams have the quality to win international trophy ahead of a new exciting season. The scheduled first leg back in March was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Sevilla had a good campaign in Spanish Primera, they wanted to be in the Champions League in the next season, and with fourth place on the table, they managed to satisfy their ambitions. The next step in the process should be a good transfer period in August but also few games in the knockout phase of the Europa League should help to measure the quality of this team ahead of new challenges. Coach Lopetegui had a rough time at the start of the season and form and results didn't match their goals but it is obvious that the team rise through games and in 2020 Sevilla was on a close level with Real or Barcelona and at the same level as Atletico Madrid.
If we look only at the results, Sevilla is unbeaten in the last 17 matches but on the other side they didn’t have a competitive match in the last twenty days and few players that are key for this team will not play vs Roma. First goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik is out with a knee injury, just as Corchia and Fernando. Ever Banega has left the club and Sergio Reguilon ended his loan spell from Real Madrid. Defensive midfielder Nemanja Gudelj is doubtful. That could be a problem for coach Lopetegui who seeks international fame after two very bad episodes as Spain national coach and coach of Real Madrid. O
ne of the talented coaches in Spain had great success with the U21 national team and Porto but after exiting senior team day ahead of the start of the World Cup because of a coaching role in Real and a string of very bad results in Madrid he is trying to prove himself again on the international level. Sevilla is very tough to beat because he likes that his teams have ball control and play without risk, so Sevilla is very prone to play matches with under 2,5 goals.
Roma had a decent season in Seria A but they managed to reach out just to fifth place in the table so if they want Champions League football again they must win Europa League. The first year under new coach Paolo Fonseca was like a rollercoaster with a lot of ups and downs but it is a popular opinion that he has done a good job in the transition year.
They were heavily depending on Edin Džeko who carried the team through the season because their wunderkind Nicolo Zaniolo had many injury problems. Also Cengiz Under had just 16 games in this season and players like Pastore, Juan Jesus or Zappacosta didn’t reach their usual levels. Roma had a good ending of the season and won in seven of the last eight games, with the only loss that came in the Napoli game a month ago.
Roma also found scoring touch after a restart of Seria A and numbers show that exactly. They scored at least two goals in the last eight games and they were provided by several players. That is a strong sign that Džeko is now more than a target in the penalty box and can help teammates to contribute with more goals from midfield or wing positions.
Roma played last round in Seria A few days ago and in an almost non-competitive match, they won vs league champions Juventus 3-1. Before the game, it was clear that Juve will be first, Roma fifth so both coaches treated this game as preparation for the knockout phase of CL and EL.
Roma will be without Lorenzo Pellegrini, Antonio Mirante, and Jordan Veretout through injuries and suspension. Chris Smalling is not available after his loan deal expired. Because of that Fonseca must find new starters for one position in central defense and another for the central midfielder place.

Despite the quality in the final third from both teams, it is clear that coaches will try to minimize mistakes and control the game. Draw in regular time and under 2,5 goals should be a good bet in those circumstances.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
