Last season's semi-finalists Shakhtar Donetsk must be on their highest level to make a spectacular comeback as they trail by three goals against Roma from the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie. Read our reasons for Shakhtar Donetsk vs Roma prediction and betting tips.
Shakhtar Donetsk coach Luis Castro believed the 3-0 Roma result was ‘unjust’ and the Stephan El Shaarawy goal should’ve been disallowed. The Giallorossi won the first leg of the Europa League Round of 16 at the Stadio Olimpico with goals from Lorenzo Pellegrini, El Shaarawy and Gianluca Mancini. “The game changed after their second goal, but it should’ve been disallowed because there was a foul in the move leading up to El Shaarawy’s strike,” said Castro. The referee played the advantage, Shakhtar then gave the ball away and Roma scored. “The regrets are that we didn’t make more of the chances that we created, while all three of their goals were avoidable. The result is unjust because it was a balanced match. Roma was defending with five men, so we should’ve spread them more down the wings. We didn’t do well in the first half, but Roma didn’t create many chances either.”
Currently, in second place in the Ukrainian Premier League - four points adrift of familiar foes Dynamo Kyiv - Luis Castro's Shakhtar Donetsk side have suffered a rare run of defeats in recent weeks, as their first domestic loss of the season against Zorya was swiftly followed by a shock cup exit to Agrobiznes Volochysk just days later. Though two subsequent league triumphs - the second of which was an emphatic 4-0 win over Desna on Sunday - have righted the ship in the league, their first leg collapse in Rome will have surely dented confidence in the camp.
Home manager Luis Castro has a mostly fit and rested squad to choose from after the Shakhtar supremo rotated his starting XI against Desna last weekend. Much-admired Israeli forward Manor Solomon may be in contention to start, having bagged a brace in league action, but one of the club's customarily burgeoning Brazilian-born contingent - Ukraine international Marlos - is favorite to play in support of Junior Moraes upfront. Deep-lying midfielder Taras Stepanenko remains out of commission with a knee injury sustained late last month, so Maycon continues to run the hosts' engine room.
Shakhtar Donetsk: Trubin; Dodo, Matvienko, Vitao, Ismaily; Maycon; Tete; Marlos, Patrick, Taison; Moraes
After 2-0 defeat against Parma, Champions League qualification will, according to media, determine if Paulo Fonseca continues at the helm of Roma. The new owners are still not happy with the results from the Giallorossi this term and Fonseca’s job is still uncertain. Max Allegri and Maurizio Sarri have been linked with the job at the Olimpico in recent months, as the Friedkin's are reportedly disappointed with the ups and downs since they took over. Sporting director Tiago Pinto plays an important part in the future of the coach, as the owners will ask for a direct report from the Portuguese director. Roma has only two more points than the last term at this point and sits fifth in the table next to Napoli, who they face on Sunday. Fonseca has stressed his team is improving, but the numbers say otherwise. His future depends on a place in the Champions League to confirm his position for 2021-22. Fonseca’s contract will automatically be renewed if the Giallorossi finish the top four in the League or win Europa League.
Roma's most productive duo in terms of goal involvements this term - former Shakhtar favorite Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who came off injured in the first half of the first leg - and Jordan Veretout are both injured and unavailable for the journey east. Reserve defender Juan Jesus tested positive for COVID-19 last week while Chris Smalling is out of action again. Fellow center-back Roger Ibanez returned to the squad at the weekend and could start alongside Marash Kumbulla and Gianluca Mancini in Smalling's absence. It is expected that captain Lorenzo Pellegrini will be rested ahead of the major clash with Napoli at the weekend, so Bryan Cristante may start alongside either Gonzalo Villar or Amadou Diawara in midfield. The central striker's role remains a tug-of-war between incumbent Edin Dzeko and previous Europa League regular Borja Mayoral.
Roma: Lopez; Mancini, Ibanez, Kumbulla; Karsdorp, Cristante, Villar, Peres; Pedro, El Shaarawy; Mayoral

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
